I've currently got the muti-changer double dinn in my Freelander but bought a nice GPS/DVD/Bluetooth/Reverse cam unit and I'm going to fit this once I sort my engine out (that's another story) I looked around for the little camera's that are supposed to fit in the number plate light at the back but despite the listing etc they look like they'd fit the Freebie 2. So I bought a different type and this will go under the handle for the rear door...... Anyhow naturally thoughts turn to monitors in the head rests for the kids and wondered if anyone had fitted this, my seats are heated and if anyone has done this let me know was it hard to get wiring down considering the other wires in the chairs already.

I know a bloke done this in his vectra. Not sure if he had heated seats or leather, or if it was normal fibre interior. He ran his wires down the inside of the headrest mounts.

Yep that's the way it would go, leather shouldn't be an issue but was wondering about the heated element dodging all them wires? I can buy the headrests with DVD's fitted or have them cut into original units it's just the heated bit that I'm stuck with not wanting to spend the cash if not able, mind you bet you can do it might have to lift leather first??

Putting the head units on hold for the moment, lets get the unit fitted first, well I've updated the maps and speedcamera setting with the lastest info and this is stored on a memory card which you place in the unit.

I've also made a nice screen saver to work with this, a nice Land Rover sign with information details.

The GPS system is igo8 and I've installed an updated version so it lets you choose other skins and you can replace the arrow with a vehicle or other picture (EG Superman/Helicopter/Snowspeeder - Starwars) I've used the "Freelander" picture haha. The good thing about igo8 is you can keep updating the maps and info points from the web or save a position of a new camera as you pass it.

As my dash is the double dinn version, this allowed me to buy a unit with a 7" screen which plays DVD's/photo's and E-books. This can be controlled by either the buttons on the unit or by the remote control (which will get lost sooner or later)!

The reverse camera I have chosen works well at night and is going to be placed on the rear door handle just above the number plate and will be wired into the reverse light for its power and to activate the camera when reverse is selected.

The unit itself isn't a high end market and there is much better out there but will do me fine as I wanted something that would work the GPS program. But I think it will look good in the dash and haven't seen many other people doing this yet.

I will update the thread with photo's of the job / end results and showing the unit in use.

Sounding good angus, look forward to the pics. Have you got the HK system and did you have any trouble with sound if you have? I've got a pioneer 7 inch flip out to fit to mine but fancy a nice double din unit so might flog the Pio and get one :) been looking at headrest screens/players as well, can get a pair 7 inch players in black headrest for around 150 which is a bit of a steal really and not worth chopping up ur own headrests?? There should be plenty of room down the back of the seat to run the wire without getting near the heating elements, just pop the side plastic trims off the sides where the back meets the base then pull the lkeather off either side and you should have enough room to get your arm up and grab them wire...

The unit's an American Import (picked it up cheap via one of my Canadian Cousins) it's new that what they do buy in from Asian market and flog in US.

Anyhow the unit only cost me £108 inc shipping and has all the wanted bits Bluetooth/GPS/DVD/Etc Runs on win6 so takes igo8 and the likes of. Only downside is the screen is fixed (cant take out for security).

I've had the unit hooked up in the house via my charging port and works as you'd expect but as normal the weather at the moment is wet so not getting out to start the job!

The single flip out's are sweet will your dash take a double unit? I've seen some good deals for the headrests would go for the FM units better for your sound options.

Hey, that was a bit of a bargain! Cheapo ones I've been looking at are around 200 so you got a good deal there! Yeah mine will take double din so looking at those over my flip out.
As for security the place I've been browsing does the dummy faces for the double din units, take a look at the link....

FP001 Dummy Face Panel for Double Din Car DVD Player on eBay (end time 14-Feb-11 21:00:25 GMT)

The headrest screens i've been looking at are complete with players, games, ir headphones and fm transmitters but if I go for the double din unit I may as well hook them all up together as well!!!

And if you haven't started it yet a quick look at this thread will give you the rundown on removing the factory unit and console...

Look forward to seeing it fitted :)

Cheers, for the ebay link thats not bad!

Taking the old unit out is the easy bit, I've had it out already when I first bought the motor as fitted Parrot the hard bit is sorting the wires out on the new unit, labels only! Might take awhile to match up.

Ok so I've matched up all the wires to functions and should be OK matching them back to the wiring already in place by LR.

I've bought a dummy front as this was a really got idea, won't put off everyone but will make me feel better about having the unit in the car.

I've made a cage for the unit which works with the original method of fixing and added a few more bolts and brackets at the rear to make life harder should it need to be removed, I'm looking into fitting a second smaller screen where the clock is fitted on the dash (remove the clock and housing and fit elswhere) having a second screen would allow the GPS system to be displayed at all times, I think that would look good and is in a better position for use, these screen as fairly cheep to pick up around £20-40.

Hope to start the work Sunday. Pictures will be taken.

Looking forward to getting started on Sunday, I've taken off most of the upgraded dash facia so it doesn't get scratched during the install (Genuine LR alloy trim finishing kit) so that will need to go back on once finished:doh:

Well nothing to report yet, weather took a turn for the worse and lashed it down so I've had to put it on hold, however I'm sure it wont be much longer before I can get started, going to start the little things like trailing the wire for the reverse cam and hooking it up to the reverse light - this work is going to be started after work as Saturday is a no go this weekend as working.

The plan is to get out tonight and make a start as the weather is bright and dry, cold but bright and dry....

I had it out the box again last night and checked the reversing camera for the first time as had to order a 5 meter cable when I originally got the unit, works good and if you wanted you can wire it up not only to work when reverse is engaged but to work when you select camera something I didn't know it done. It also has parking distance on the screen to tell you how many feet until you hit something.

So this will be the first part of the job, getting the camera fitted, wired up and cable trailed upto dash.

Hey!! Less your lip.

It comes with the unit...... So why wouldn't I fit it, a lot of cars that have double din come with them and if it stops me reversing over a kid or dog which throws themself behind my car if only to test the reversing sensors which you cant hear as you've got your radio on loud (Willing to reverse over cats, hate cats!) then it was worth fitting.

Even the best plans fail to start sometimes, the weather is seriously stopping me from getting on with this work, the weather at the moment is fine, once I finish work it changes and starts to rain, Saturday rained, Sunday, rained, back to work and it's sunny! If I step out the house it rains, I'm gonna put on a fake wig and hat to see if that helps......

At least with your cameras, you'll be able to see if it's raining behind you.....if it isn't you can reverse back a bit :p
