Hi,

I have fitted Discovery LT77 gearbox and transfer box into my Defender 90 200 TDI. Everything went o.k, I moved the gear box back and modified the propshafts. I've put it all back together and theres no reverse gear. It selects all the other gears except reverse. Does anyone no what I might have done wrong or if there are any safety switches or wiring I might have missed. Any help would be greatly appreciated, really stressing about this one. Thanks

does gear lever move across against spring ,does lever go forward enough(reverse switch been wound into far can can stop lever )if lever moves fully into correct position could be selector lever inside box ,which would require main case removing without disturbing sandwich plate and rear case

Hi, Thanks for that, could you tell me where the reverse lever switch is located and I will give it a try, as it seems to go in the right place for reverse but not far enough.

If you take off the centre pannel between the two front seats to reveal the back end of the gearbox, there should be what looks like a bolt with two connector on it. it goes horizontally into the back of the gearbox near the top, should be pretty obvious when you get in to have a look.
best bet would be to disconnect the wires, unscrew it until it is almost all the way out, then engage reverse and tighten it back up until you can just start to feel a slight resistance of it comming into contact with the ear selector.

Just tried it, unfortunatley hasn't worked. Its moving forward and selecting the other gears, albeit a stiff, it is a reconded gearbox done approx 20,000 miles that I've fitted, do you think it could be a clutch fork problem or an actual clutch problem. Dont really want to have to take the full thing out again, such a pain.

No, just goes into fifth, no further. Could it possible be the safety switch, what I've heard mentioned and does anyone know where to find it. thanks

cant say too much as your description doesnt give much away ,but yoke on selector shaft under gewar stick turret often comes loose if more than reverse are difficult

Sorry to repeat something jm asked first up, but wasn't clear whether you've completely unscrewed the reverse light switch and then seen if you can select reverse gear?

That was the first thought that entered my mind when reading your post, but my gearbox knowledge is very limited indeed - as in fact jm can verify:D

sorry mate my mistake, I did mean first. When I push it over to first, as far as it will go and then let the clutch out as if to pull off it goes forward as if its in first, no reverse. I have completely unsrewed the reverse switch and tried it then, still no reverse. thanks for all the help on this one.

undo reverse plunger on drivers side of selector housing under gear stick turret .it suposed to be sprung loaded to enable you to feel 1st ,they seize up

just checking ;)

when you press it right over and up, if you pull it back down does it go in 2nd or just stop?

If you put a disco box into a defender you would've had to cut a bit out of the front of the seat box- have you cut enough to allow full travel of the gearstick?
