I think it wud depend on whether it was front or rear wheel drive.
I wud rather have drive, brakes and steering than just drive. 4wd mite be another kettle of fish, but with fwd I wud still have the best tyres on the front.

aye but what are the best tyres????
part worn tyres actually have more grip in the dry than new tyres due to more rubber being in contact wiff the road surface. new tyres have more grip in the wet due to deeper tread fer pumpin the water out the way to allow the actual rubber to make contact wiff the road surface.

On early vehicles, before 2001 this is a problem, unless you have changed the IRD for a NEW one built after 2001. All "NEW" post 01 IRD's have REVISED GEAR RATIO's according to the LRO MAGAZINE.

I know what happened to mine and with new tyres on the back its obvious that the VCU is now much happier. Recently I noticed that the 'booming' noise had come back on roundabouts and junctions, then I also noticed that I was driving round them in third instead of second, it makes that much difference.
On reflection I was reluctant to admit that it had a problem but the rest of the family would resolutly drive the Defender and leave me with the hippo until I changed the tyres, now I get my defender back more often. Better get some work done its 10.30 ffs!
