Hey all, I am currently shopping for insurance for a 1991, 200Tdi Defender I have recently secured. It is still in the garage getting a few touch ups (Alloy's repainted) and have been shopping around for insurance.

I have tried some of the staples that are mentioned here such as Flux, Lancaster and have sent an email to NFU and waiting reply, the Landy I bought has a winch on the front and that seems to be bumping the cost of the insurance up DRAMATICALLY (Going from around £805 to £3,546). I have also declared that it has had a suspension raise and a re-colour although these don't seem to effect the insurance so much. I am 27, have been riding a motorcycle for around 7 years, and driving a car for a year as well.

So insurance do company's have a problem with a winch being fitted and if so, why? Its not something I would be using yet as I will wait a few months before considering off-roading but it maybe something useful to have, plus it looks pretty badass, I understand they can be susceptible to being stolen and the garage has offered to spot weld the bolts.

Also have you guys found that fitting an alarm/immobilizer lowers the insurance with many of these more Land Rover specialist company's?

Included is a pic of the Landy, many thanks in advance! :)

There some crazy prices your getting quoted!! £270 for me all mods declared and I'm 22.

Postcode has alot to do with price, if it is the winch bumping up the price... Why not get rid of it??

Yeah, the prices really seem to be all over the place, these are all online quotes though, who did you go for?

i know mate its a pain. i used to have a 300tdi disco and an audi S3 and paid less than a grand for both and now am payin that for one car its ridiculous

I could get the winch removed, I just wondered if anyone knew why it put the price up so much? Its on the vehicle as I bought it. Would be a pain getting the bolt welds cut, disconnected and then having to find a new bumper for it as well. I won't be using it and as of yet don't have an interest in off-roading, I have a feeling that because a winch is included they automatically bump it up to some kind of off-road premium insurance?

Winches get nicked quite a lot. So do tratters. Easy to do so if you think about it. This is your winch could be nicked once, replaced on insurance, then nicked again.

If the winch int needed take it off. May sound stupid, but it changes the length of the vehicle. Any change in size from standard is a concern. Also something poking out the front like a winch will cause more damage in a crash as the absorption is centralised in a smaller area. Now yer may be thinking that sounds stupid. If a tratter hits something then it will win. But if you crash head on at 7mph it will only be cracked bumper and a bit of paint needed, hopefully. Do so with a winch on the front and the same force in a smaller area will allow the winch to pass through the bumper into metal work etc.

Hmm, I found some pretty decent insurance with performance direct so far, gonna ring around a few others but my best so far is roughly £649 fully comp with mods declared and breakdown cover so that's not too bad thus far but will ring someone I have been recommended tomorrow too.

Compare the market was the cheapest for me, say that you have owned your motor for a few year, add 2 named drivers with 15+ experince and no accidents and your laughing.
