I have Just become the proud Co owner of a 1994 discovery. She's a beaut but is a shocker to start when it's cold ! Will only start with a jump ! All plugs new etc. When I turn the key nothing, not a single little tick ! Could it need a new or more heavy duty battery do you folks think ? I'm a total novice here !

Hi and Welcome

Does it start OK with a jump start?

When you say "all new plugs" what do you mean, Glow or spark plugs, Is it Diesel or Petrol?

Cheers

Then ,

To start with.

I would be getting the battery checked over, also checking the charging system to make sure it is getting a good charge from the alternator.

Plus , I would be looking at whether it has a battery drain , that is killing the battery overnight.

Once that is done you should know what direction to take.

Cheers

You are welcome, looks like you need to find someone with a multimeter to check the vehicle over and do a little investigation. May also be worthwhile to see if one of your local autoparts shops does free battery checks, just make sure they are not going to try and take you for a ride.

Buying a new battery may fix your issues, but it may not. Then again if the battery has done a lot of service then it could be a worthwhile investment anyway.

Good luck.

Multi meters are cheap and there's a wealth of easy to follow instruction vids on youtube if you feel like getting stuck in :) There's plenty here that'll happily walk you through it as well.

Even if you cant ultimately fix it being able to diagnose the problem is very satisfying and good protection from being ripped off
