Had to go on an errand today, eighty odd miles round trip and was dreading the fuel bill.
It's the first run out since fitting the 1.22 transfer box to the V8 so I filled the gas up and off we went. The gas used to get me 90 miles with the 1.44 transfer box so I was watching the green lights with interest, hoping that I wouldn't have to switch to petrol to get me home.
Stuck to 50 on the motorway as me steering damper is fooked and I gets a wobble on around fifty five, the engine was dead happy at 2300 ish and we cruised along on a light throttle even against the wind with a roof rack.
Any way, I was suprised to still have three lights showing when we got back, so even if we used half a tank of gas that's a fantastic improvement.
Nice to bubble round between 1500 and 200 revs when you want to and still keep up with the traffic.
Not tried it with the trailer on but the V8 dosent mind the higher gearing under normal cicumstances, I supose if you wanted to cruise at eighty then it would slow a bit on the hills but hey, yer cant have it all ways can yer.

I'm looking to go the other way with mine at some point. Fitted 31" tyres and the gearing is raised about 8% but because we tow a lot I'd like to drop the gearing to stock or a bit less, but there isn't really a cheap way to do it for a Disco and retain the tyre size .. :(

Mind, I also want 33" tyres next .....

Would it fit? What sort of gearing are they?

Actually we've not looked at it properly or in any detail, it's just a pipe-dream really .. but I reckon late next year we'll look further into it.

iv got 36" on mine n av got a early 110 transfer box t fit wen i get round t it,trouble is thers never enuf hours in the day...........or nite!

Of course it would, the Disco box fits directly into Defenders, except for the need to tap two additonal holes for the Defender style hand brake; so if you put the Defender one into the Disco the ONLY difference would be the two M8 holes would not be needed!

LOL, sorry, this is the Defender section, mine's a Disco .. saw the post in LZLive ... my bad!!

;)

But .. had a quick shufty at Rave, defender has LT230 but so does Disco .. and both have same ratio diffs (3.54:1) front and rear .. does anyone know where the info for the different transfer box ratios are? Doesn't seem to be anything different in Rave ..

Thanks for that .. some light reading for bedtime ... ;)

And some more information to add to that list.

Low range reverse is the lowest gear you can get with our LT77's and R380's - low range reverse would be some SERIOUS halfshaft snapping, diff shattering pulling power!

also would add that my 110 does 30mph in low range, and still not flat out in fifth, handy for towing uphills.:)

Heh, during a recent weekend laning with 90boy I kept mine in low box for a short road section .. flat out in fifth, 47 mph .. screaming it's guts out ... ;)

Last time I do that unless I know I'm staying under 30.

Low range isn't an issue for us, it's high range that I want lowering, I'm doing 70 mph at just about 2500 rpm .. no need to go faster, but when towing at the legal 60 revs are ~2100, just getting on turbo. I'd rather have 60mph at 2500 - 3000 in top so it's towing at the optimum rev range for the turbo to be working properly.

I reckon it'lll be cheaper as the engine would be working easier .. ;)

Someone told me I could maybe change diff pinions or crown wheels, smaller pinion, larger crown, for the same or similar effect ....

Sounds like you need a defender transfer box :D, I know where there is one FREE no hidden cost or influence by forum members etc ;) just needs collection;)

Or fit the Defender transfer box, it one thing, no faffing about, nuts and bolts, remove and replace.
