Hello, I need a first car, and think a defender would be cool, as the insurance is sub 1k and can run on veggie oil, my dad and I would like advice on where to buy a defender, what we should look for, what kind of defender, etc. we have a budget to buy ok about 3k and I can pay for repairs.

Thanks in advance

Well, the great thing about Land Rovers is that most bits can be replaced, depending on how much time and money you've got for the project. You may have seen on here and elsewhere tales of people replacing whole chassis, doing engine swaps and the like, all of which is in reach for the dedicated amateur. Personally, I'd be most inclined to look for rust in the chassis and bulkhead, or at least try and avoid vehicles with lots of it, unless you like lying on your back in a puddle with bits of welding spatter going down the neck of your shirt every weekend for the next year or two.

I've just turned 17 and I got my 90 last year. With buying a landy, think of a number and double it. I got mine for £1.5k and have spent over twice that on parts, but I knew that from the start. I bought mine to rebuild not to bodge.

Cornish, you landy looks amazing for that price, I can do easy repairs, like angle gring a bit off, and weld a bit on, it is when it comes to intricate engines and dismantaling an axel i would struggle!

Go a 1990 defender 90 as my first car last summer has been a goo machine ! Where are you getting insurance for sub 1K from is what i want to know ?

Aviva is the place to go, £900 for my first year and now £700 for my second, thats me as mine driver as well, so my NCB are building up.

Mine is a hard top. Pretty sure i went to Aviva for a quote and they said they wouldn't insure me. Only people that would insure me at a reasonable price was Adrain Flux or theri sister company Flux direct.

I'm 18 now, got my 2.5 petrol 90 last year for £350, for an mot it needed new light units all round, a new passenger footwell and a spot of weld on the tow bracket. Insurance through aviva for £1500 I think. I have loved my first year with it, especially after a tdi transplant and it's only stranded me twice and each time was for stupid little things.
After I got it on the road with a bit of polish.

Aviva, a 2.5l TD from 1986 got reg of ebay, hard top, 3rd party fire and theft, both my parents as aditional drivers, with their no claims and no convictions, plus i think i have a good postcode, was £789.95 for the year! and my dad was looking at a diahatsu copen, buy it for 2.5k insurance for 1.5k so he is pleased with a defender, still need to know what to get, what to look for, and for 2.5k how much rust?

I'd be finding out how much the insurance goes up after you've passed you're driving test mate, you could be in for a shock.
