Just so I can plan my process, what did the alloy strips finishing the top edge of the lower half of the Series III have when they left the factory.

I'm thinking of getting mine anodised for longevity. I suspect most people just paint them with aluminium or silver paint but I tend towards original factory finishes where poss. So, anodised or what?

Ooohhhh....

So really they should clean up OK, maybe with a bit of mechanical polishing?

Al.

Some people have painted them but I think the original look is better. You could get them re-galvenized if you want a shiny look but they don't stay like that for long.

Agreed that original with some patina is always better.

I'll just clean 'em up. Wire wool may do the job.

Yes wire wool and a bit of hydraulic oil is what I used on mine. Then used hyd. oil and a rag to give the bodywork a polish as well.;)

and if some idiot PO has decided to paint them a blowtorch happily burns the paint off taking them back to a dull galv finish as long as you are careful and keep the torch moving.

You can get galv paint spray in several colours inlcuding "old galv". Don't use abrasives, once you rub through the galv the protection is gone. My galv was thin so now its painted body colour, its ex-army so it would have been painted over orginally, (the thinness is probably because some silly ... sanded the paint off.). Body colour looks nice, better than I expected.
