Finding out where it's been!

Hi, When I bought my 1985 '90' it had loads of stickers on it - like, Cornwall lifeguard, mole valley farmers, etc but I took them all off as part of 'renovating' it (and now wish i'd left them on). It just made me wonder who had owned it and where it had been. Does anyone know how to find out the history? I've done a quick google and tried a few vin number sites, but they cost and don't seem to provide the sort of info I'm after.
I'm hoping someone else got all nostalgic ;-)

I did this for my Series Landy and got back a great stack of photocopies of all the changes in ownership, etc.
