I finally put the freeloader on blocks today, ready to change the clutch not that I'm convinced it is the clutch. anyway I removed that damned stone guard and saw underneath for the first time. the bolts felt stiff like they were cross threaded but when the guard was off I put the bolts back insit sose not to lose em and they went back in by hand quite easy! does this mean putting the stone guard back on is gonna be stressfull I wondered ! I've marked the guard for drilling to give easy access for future servicing (sump plug) but I dont see how I can get to the oil filter with out removing the plasic pannel behind the wheel any advice on this is wellcome. anyways when I turn the front drive shafts theres a clicking sound coming from the transfer box but not a sound from the gear box. the drive shafts havent got any play at all and the gaters are all in excellent condition on both sides, no leakages such as oil or grease, but I did notice after about 3/4 of a turn they get quite stiff and to complete a full rotation in either direction the last 1/4 needed a firm grip this leads me to think that the transfer box is gonna need replacing. the brake discs have a lip around the edge due to lack of previous service/pad replacement so I was thinking of replacing them with vented discs, is there any benefit from this? and thats as far as it got. am gonna buy some batterys fort camera sose you can keep up wi me progress an gimmee lot suv advice n stuff but I rekon due to costs it will take a **** load longer than the week I had in mind.

you will need to raise all 4 wheels to rotate 1 or you wiil be fighting the VCU. disk rotors will always wear a lip, have them skimmed if you feel they need it. not sure how easy it would be to change to vented disks?, has it been done before??

Hi aussie, the front wheel hubs turn in neutral,(no rear drive connected) but there is a clicking sound from the transfer box, I think this is the sound I've been hearing. when I described it on LZ at an earlier date, people seemed to think it was the clutch release bearing. as for the discs the wear lip is close to 2mm and the discs are quite scratched I can get them skimmed but recken that for a few pounds more I could have new ! I've seen vented dics somewhere on intnet and wonderd if there was any advantage. Will post pics jus soon as I find out how ?

aint no advatage of vented discs at all [s- pose to cool quicker . . . .load er tosh] but if you can get em cheaper so be it, watch out on flea bay thurs sum made orft ****e pig iron, only buy goodens. . . .:) :) :)

still tryin to find the problem before order parts & open my tool chest.
the noise is comming from the transfer unit and sounde like very worn bearings, is there a set of bearings in this unit and is /could this be the problem and if so what are the options as reguards replace bearings or the unit as a whole ! answers on a postcard please to bushys DIY project.
Oh, cheers ming will prob replace like for like was gonna wait to find out what I need to replace then order all parts at once an hope fully save a bit on postage

Hallo again, I'm still tryin to find out what the noise is before I start takin things apart, has anyone had probs with front drive shafts at the gearbox end, and if I turn the right front wheel hub anti clock wise should the left hub turn clock wise ?

its sat on blocksev wood ? thats how come I c'n turn the wheel hubs, but yeah I got a beutifull pair of axle stands they'r red an black an go up an down an theyr very shiny an new. but should the wheels turn in opposite directions ?

ffs bushy just burn it,,,, an put it oot its misery,,,:D :D :D

in neutral they should spin in opposite directions, the gearbox differential might be shot....
When did you last check the gearbox and IRD oil?
My IRD bearings are worn, whines when driving and clonking noise qhen you rotate either front wheel back and forwards.

Still to strip down the IRD and post piccies

Couldnt tell you about the gearbox noise? just got a freelander so haven't looked how it works :)

The brakes....if its like all other cars and it will be...you cant replace solid brake discs with vented ones unless you replace the caliper and the carrier. Your trying to fit something with and approx width of 22mm in to the space where a 12mm disc should fit.

There will be a min. thickness for brake discs in the specs somewhere, (sometimes stamped around the centre of the disc itself...but im not away to take a wheel off to look) you dont need to replace them until the reach that spec or unless the are damaged/warped
