The last chapter in my saga of hate with my EAS. Got the fault cleared this morning by local chap who reported yet a new fault code. It's cleared, and the system finally got up, but it's sitting down slightly on the nearside. System faulted again on 5 minute ride home.

So it looks like could be faults with any/all of the following: air leaks (which could be pipes, connections or perished bags, or a sticky valve), dodgy compressor, a faulty pressure switch, or a faulty height sensor.

Rather than spend hours trying to track it, and possibly find all these problems anyway, I have therefore *irrevocably* decided to rip it all out an do a spring conversion. From the feedback I've read a proper set of springs and the ride quality will be just as good. I now realise I should have done it 24 months ago.....

its a sad day when innovations ahead of thier time cannot cherished, R.I.P comfort and ride quality!!!

dont do it, refurb the current kit and it will be better in the long run!

I agree, dont do it! If you do your car will plummet in value! Nobody wants a Range Rover with Springs.

Before you rip out the air springs and put back the ancient system of coil springs, have you looked and read this through this site, all you should ever need to know about the suspension.

Consider that it is probably more expensive to replace the air suspension with coil springs than sort out your problem with it, personally I wouldn't touch a P38 on coils...unless its dead cheap for some spares that I could use...

30 quid for the lead from the states, download the free diagonstic/set up program and a spray bottle filled with soapy water....sorted.

there are good points about air but if you want hassle fre rangering springs is the way.everyone here has had probs with air at somepoint.they are also less to carry so more mpg:D

Most peeps here are not willing to pay main stealer's prices or are diy'ers, so come here for advice and help.

You are joking, that by fitting suspension, that is a few pounds lighter in weight is going to increase the mpg on a vehicle with the aerodynamics of a brick...:hysterically_laughi

Guys, I am glad to hear the debate raging!

zzr1200 that is a good site, although I found the EAS buddy already, but the laptop+cable+software is quite a cheap solution. *BUT* I gotta say - the fact that there is a whole website devoted to EAS problems, and offering tools to combat them... that says it all!

adamforeman: a 99 P38 with 90k+ on the clock ain't ever gonna pay off my mortgage. Besides, in 12months it'll be worth less anyway, as will L322's heh heh.

EAS is a great system: innovative, ahead of it's time, cool, useful. But then, so were tiger tanks and they ended up broken down all over eastern europe awaiting parts :-0

The spring kit is still on...

Mine aint either, but no way would I rip out the air suspension and fit coils.

I spoke to Dakar Cars which is my local 4x4 experts and garage, they said to install springs is about the same as fixing the air system.

They also advised not to do it.....he said you'd get £1K? afterwards! That's what people get drawn to is the air suspension, that's one of the key points to a Rangie.

iv already converted mine to coils, what do you get with air ..smoother ride, adjustable settings auto levelling...buzz-fault on dash....buzz reduce your speed..ok you can sort out these niggles out and with vehicles around ten years these have to be addressed, however what i most gained by fitting coils was PEACE of mind, knowing travelling up n down uk with caravan less to think about. yeah big cost 950 Batrams Lancashire....but for me worth it.

Another coil spring convert here - best thing I ever did
I'd like to know how many of the owners spouting off about poor handling on coils have ever tried one - mine handles FAR better on coils, the steering is more responsive and the car actually wants to go where you point it now
TBH I was never convinced by the vagueness of the air suspension anyway - never really seemed to be in control

As for devaluing the car - get real, do you really think people buy P38's for the well documented troublsome air suspension ? - I think not !
If I was in the market for another one then coil conversion would be top of my shopping list
As for insurance implications my insurers noted the change to coils but they weren't really interested and it made no difference to the premium
Long live coil suspension ! :)

I actually admire owners who persist in fixing the air suspension time and time again - more patience (and money) than I've bloody got !
Bottom line for me was needing a car that worked everytime I needed it to - not when it felt like it
As already mentioned, one less thing to worry about..........................
each to their own I guess - I really don't have any issues with the air spring brigade but they seem to jump on the soap box at the very mention of coils

Had the same problem, them it hit the stop bumps and stayed there, was like riding a donkey over the sticks. Drove one with the spring conversion for a trial, not impressed. Have it repaired, new valves seals etc plus six months warranty, cost a few bob, but what dosen't on a P38.
