Love my disco, very capable and robust offroad. However if there was one thing I would like to improve it would be the engine power and then drive chain back lash/general slop. I intend eventually to put a 300tdi trany in to help on that side, but does anyone have any good soloutions to try and up the power of the engine, or have any ideas for conversions to more powerfull diesel engines. I come from a background of jap offroaders and they've all been faster. We also have a 2.5 litre Paj and it has way more usable power even in 4x4, even though its listed as having less HP. Would just like to improve the speed of the vehicle as when you hit the black top its the slowest 4x4 I've owned so far. Now I'm into the landy I have a bit of british pride so I would like to think it could be a bit swifter at times. You dont buy a 4x4 for speed but honestly the 200tdi has to be the slowest 115hp motor I've driven! I actually have to use Low Range to get up gradients that I dont have to use LR in when in other offroaders, just because the motor doesnt have enough grunt. Any thaughts appreciated, cheers Jim

Unless its a very steep gradient, i would never think of using L/R when on tarmac, it sounds like your engine is lacking power due to a fault or problem surely?

My 300tdi is no rocket but i'm happy with it now im used to the lower acceleration compared to my other motor. It did take some serious tinkering to get her going though.

No,Ive had 200 and there definitely was no grunt lacking....if anything more low end power than the 300,by feel anyhow. The 200 is a good unit if not as refined as the 300 but was a good motorway cruiser at 60-70 if a bit noisy.I have found that with jap 4x4s you have a much higher revving engine than the landy,I rarely get above 3000 in either 2 or 300s.

Id say your 200 has some serious probs mate !

Start off with a full service, change all your fluids and filters. Change all your belts, check timing. Gearbox and transfer box oil. Everything.

Then if you are still not seeing any improvement.... well... you should!

Thanks for the tips. i'm pretty sure the motor is running fine. I've given it a full service and it will yes easily do 60-70 on the motorway, probably hit 85-90 top end. And I dont nead to use low range on tarmac, unless its very steep...but I just notice I have to use low range more when I'm driving in the terrain, more then with my other 4x4. I definately agree the japs have a broader rev range. It just feels pretty slugish overal, the cars only done 120,000 miles, so I'm up for modifying if there is any mods that can be done to tune it up a bit. Anyone have any other suggestions. I thaught about a larger intercooler, modified waste gate, and turn up the pump. Just wondered if anyone else had done anything like this. Or if for example anyone had put a larger diesel motor in. Thanks for the advice. j

a larger intercooler, turn up the boost about 10% turn up the fuel pump. Keep an eye on Exhaust gas temperature, if it gets too hot it can destroy your engine.

I know a defender 200tdi with all these mods and the inclusion of propane injection. Thats for serious minded only though
