Having just discovered I have a fbh........ I need to get it working.

Pulled fuse 5 and replaced but nothing. Had a look through the mesh grille but can't see anything resembling a sensor....... Should the sensor be on the passenger side??

Any other suggestions?

Sensor I think is on drivers side. The sensor is not directly behind the grill but more in between the fog light and grill.

After spending most of the afternoon trying to get the fbh to spring into life and giving up....just popped out to the local shop. Parked up and switched off only to hear a strange noise coming under the bonnet. Jumped out only to find clouds of smoke coming from the fbh exhaust. This was with heater on max and fan on 4...

Is that significant or should it work with any fan speed

At least I now know it works!!!

Should work regardless of fan speed or position of heater temperature controls.

On a cold morning you should hear it wheeze into life within about 30 seconds of the car starting. You can also hear the pump clicking away behind you.

My heater control has a destinctive click when fully off / cold and the FBH looks to only start up when the heater control is above the lower 'clicked' limit. Has anyone else noticed this ?

As Mr Rimmer says it should only come on when less than 5 degrees, otherwise it would be on all the time and wasting fuel.... which is my problem as sensor has shorted out. :(

if it does not come on when its below the 5 degrees have a look at the wiring behind the bumper I along with a couple of others pulled the wiring when it kept running when it should not have then parted with the car and for got to put it back this might be the case

Well I am note sure my FBH is doing its told ! It certainly comes on when the air temperature is well above 5 deg and well up in to 10 deg and when I stop after a reasonably long journey the FBH is still running ! Then when I switch off the ignition it continues running for about 1 to 2 mins which I understand is normal as this is burning off excess fuel. So is my FBH faulty and if so could this simply be the 5 deg thermostat switch behind the front bumper which requires replacing ?

if its below 5 degrees the FBH will run. If it runs above 5 degrees, the sensor behind the bumper has gone and needs replacement. you can prove it by disconnecting the sensor and it should stop.
picture of sensor is here: http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/8284/oct1321fd1.jpg

if its below 5 degrees and the engine is running, the fbh will burn fuel to heat the coolant until it reaches about 70 degrees. once it reaches this, the fbh will still run the coolant pump but not burn fuel.

when you stop and turn the engine off, the fbh will run its purge cycle for 2 mins.

Thanks Snapper, very helpful post. (looked for a thumbs up smilie but couldn't see one)

Hi, I'm new to LandyZone and wondering if someone may be able to help. Have noticed that the FBH on my 2004 HSE Freelander seems to come on everytime I drive it and it's not been below 5c yet!

We've changed the sensor as we thought it may be faulty but the FBH is still coming on all the time.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Is the engine getting up to temperature? I understand that if the thermostat has gone this can affect the FBI operation.

Just replaced the temp switch behind the bumper (landrover part / green type) and the FBH is now working and does what it says on the tin !
