i put the FCR on the rangie and found the following fault in the BOSCH-GS2.38 1 FAULT - OBO1B- ANTI STALL FAULT (INVALID SHAFT SENSOR DATA)

anyone know what caused the fault and what it is? i wasent getting in to 4th gear and after clearing it it seems to be popping in to 4th now.

Do the ecu's compair the engine rpm and the gearbox rpm to check for slip etc? if there was a discrepancy between the two rpm's then it may fault code the slower of the two...just a thought...?

Assuming that is the engine ECU, sounds like the crank sensor which the Engine ECU uses to determine that the engine is running and at what speed. There are also sensors on the gearbox and transfer box that report shaft RPM. The gearbox ECU appears to use engine rpm and gearbox shaft rpm to control changes.
Has the fault reurned?

In some auto gearboxes one gear was a direct top, meaning in that gear the gearbox output shaft should be the same rpm as engine rpm, if it wasent within a percentage then a fault was recorded and limp home was selected which is usually 3rd in a 4 speed box?

4th on the P38 is over geared at .72? or something, third is direct. However the ECU's are not very smart, mine doesn't detect the engine over reving on 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd changes.

no sign of the fault returning and 4th is still there, however i still have the dreaded case that when i start the engine sometime the gear D or R arent there. so i have to rev it a little and could take up to 2 mins to get it to engage in a gear. ATF level seems fine checked it again today.

Sounds VERY MUCH like low fluid level/ pressure; forgive me if you got it right but do check ATF when COLD. Open bonnet, start engine, move selector from P thru to 1, then back to P. Check level with engine still running.
If low top-up slowly - DO NOT overfill!!!

In having to rev a while, it suggests low fluid level/pressure???

I completely agree with you. i have done that, even used the guide on rangerovers.net maybe im have too much in there?? when i get home from work i will let it sit for an hour or 2 and then start it, cycle through the gears back in to park open the filler nut and let out what ever comes out.
