Went to park up, engine on 04discovery not sounding good, stalled, would not fire, just turning over. Finally started but was, looked and sounded as if running on 4.stalled once gear engaged... It was put on diagnostics and came up "road speed missing fault" code 96. Cleared fault, running fine now. Can anybody shed any light on any reason as to what caused the fault . Thanks for any help. !!!!!

That code must have been hystorical and has nothing to do with engine starting/running... it used to get logged after a heavier bump when the vehicle speed signal might have been disturbed for a second or the comunication between the SLABS ECU and engine ECU had a glitch... a current fault associated to this code would let the speedometer dead... for the missfire/starting issue if it will become more persistent the crank sensor is the first suspect, meanwhile make sure there's no oil in the ECU red plug cos that's very common and can give various intermittent engine running symptoms

I'd agree with sierrafery, above, check the red plug in the engine ECU. The injector harness can become contaminated with oil which can lead to all sorts of odd engine behaviour.
It would also help if you mentioned which diagnostic device you used, because many "generic" code readers don't communicate properly with the Td5 and can give odd or nonsense readings; the diesel Disco didn't become fully OBDII compliant until later in 2004 when the D3 was released.

My disco was registered early 2004 and yes he did have problems reading at first.. So first things first check the ECU plug and injector harness. The glow plugs haven't been changed from new so as the dashboard preheat only stays on for a second or two will be the following job. Many thanks sierrafery and brian47. I will let you know how it turns out.

Be aware that the glowplug warning lamp has nothing to do with the plug's condition or feed, it's managed by the ECU based on coolant temp sensor input and shows the time while the ECU is energising the relay's coil that's all, it will work the same even if you remove the relay or the plugs so if the plugs.
