I have a forward control year 1968 - belive its a 109 Series 2 or 3 B.
These vehicles were used in the South African Army as ambulance/offices.
Converted as camper.
It is just too slow @ 60/70 KmpH.
Believe the heavy reduction is in the diff. Diff shape is round.
Does somebody know if crownwheel/pinon of any other LR with less reduction will fit?
Thanks

What engine has it got?

You can probably use Discovery diffs, although I am not certain, I have very little to do with military stuff.
You will need to change them both, or you will mess up 4wd.

The problem is going to be whether the engine has the power to pull it. It will also put quite a bit of load on the clutch.

To be honest, I think you would be better to live with it, these are military trucks, not fast cars.
And if you do manage to make it go fast, you will spend a fortune on fuel, as the aerodynamics are zero.

Probably a series gearbox. LT76.

an overdrive is one option

Ashcroft high ratio transfer box is another

I think the diffs might be ENV, so obscure, and difficult to find different ratio gear sets.

The six cylinder should be able to push it faster on the flat.

Photos of gearbox, diff, and general please?

Engine is a chevrolet straight 6 (conversion done by SADF originally). High fuel affinity.
Gearbox is the standard series 2
I have ubgraded breakes by exchanging original booster with TDI. Application now does more than just a change of facial expression.
Vehicle runs in Namibia - distances are vast - hence speed of 60 Km/h is just is too slow. Would be happy with 100Km/h at acceptable reduced revs.
Unfortunately specialised UK solutions will be prohibitively expensive with an exchange of 20:1. I am hoping the problem is solveable with local landrover parts.

Cheapest would be old range rover diffs. But only if you've rover axles. Or swap defender axles in complete.

I presume you've access to talented and inventive mechanics, used to making do and improvising. So a complete axle swap is viable?

Yes though of that. Existing axels are wider and heavier than defender though (presume ENV). Vehicle is topheavy as it is. Spacers not a good option when going cross country 4X4.
My first option was to look at the diffs. Second is transfer case. Where would I be able to enquire about different ratio gears for the transfer case?

Or you can go remote transfer box with a defender transfer box, or full defender gearbox.

More and more fabrication, though

Email them, I think they batch produce once there's enough demand.
Very good on a Series, no raising gearing on Low Range, no extra controls, and much stronger than an overdrive.
I have had them before, but always with big diesel conversions.

The issue I can see from OPs point of view is that there may not be enough power to pull 4th uphill with the Ashcroft Trans box.
And also, they raise the gearing about 20% in high range, so maybe not the performance improvement he is looking for.
