Fan Warning

Taking the fan off your Disco is a good idea. BUT I just discovered that if you tow a 1.5 ton trailer and get stuck in a traffic jam on a really hot day, the engine will overheat. Had to keep running the heater with the cabin fan on full to cool it down. Not nice on a hot day.
Next time I'll remember to keep the fan and the spanner in the car just in case.

Or fit an electric one with a switch on the dash??

ya engine warms up a little sooner and you don't spray as much mud & cack round ya engine bay when you're out greenlaning/P&P.

I would check the rad for crud, tdi's do not overheat in traffic if all is well and the VC is removed. If your sitting in traffic the caravan will not make any difference.

Most have viscous couplings these days that allow the amount of HP transmitted to the fan to be limited when the engine is cold, gradually locking up when it is hot.

In the general scheme of things, a fan is going to take 2-4 bhp, depending on rpm and thermal condition of the engine.

Putting an electric fan is not a bad idea on a TD5, but on the V8 it is already bumping against its cooling capacity and I'd leave the fan in place, which we did after the rebuild.

or swap it for an elctric and swith it on when needed.Also been told the ac fans will just about cope on there own.

The other thing to look at is whether the fan is the air side or the engine side of the radiator.

I prefer engine side as there is no masking of the radiator core by the fan and supports.

fan also helps keep gearbox tunel slightly cooler when towing. anything that keeps air moving in hot slow trafic with trailer on must help. I left fan off all winter but its back on now,will prob take it off again sept/oct when temp starts to drop.

I removed the fan from my 300 tdi (manual) about 2 months ago, and it made little difference to the fuel consumption. Noise was reduced, and it was quicker to warm up, but I still couldn't crack 500 miles per tank.
I confess that I bottled it, and refitted the fan during this hot weather, but I shall remove it again before next winter.
At least it's very quick and easy to do - under one minute on average!
