Actually they are only tripped on an overheat Tony.

No, on the disel, it's a simple thermal switch fitted on later models only, on the petrol it's controlled by the engine ECU and unless you are a dab hand with software it's fixed
PM only as there are folks who would try to use it to mask an overheating problem then blame the mod.

You don't need to know that, you set the stat to start the fans when the engine is up to normal running temperature as shown on the gauge, then back it off until the fans just stop. Job done.
