Failure to start when hot

I’m having trouble with my 2003 Freelander MK1 TD4

It starts fine when cold blows the usual cloud of blue smoke, if I drive A to B no problem, but if I go to a garage to get fuel and it fires and dies no power, yesterday it took 4 attempts to get going.

Any thoughts please what’s wrong?

Check fault codes. Usually hot start problems are camshaft sensor.

I agree with Andy above, if the Fl1 is driving ok and you stop after a while for anything, come back to the car and it does not start or struggles to start until if cools down then it is most likely the cam sensor.

Unplug the wiring remove the little torx bolt, a 5ml socket will get it out no problem, there is a test you can do drive around for the amount of time it happens drive back home pull up on your drive or outside your home, wait just like when you getting fuel or have been in a shop etc, try starting the car if it's the same remove the cam sensor, stick it in a food bag into the freezer for about 5-10mins refit and see if the car starts if so you know it's the can sensor.

Also when was the fuel filter last changed ?

Hi ,thank you both for your advice, much appreciated .Last service was in February when we paid the Princley sum of £350 !!.See if I can get a replacement off ebay

I had the same issue, only intermittently.
For the price, I just put a new cam sensor on anyway.
I’ve also recently replaced all filters, including the fuel filter. It’s not happened since, so fingers crossed, though I don’t know which one it was!
