Failed mot emissions bigtime

get new fuel filter and fill with FORTE diesel treatment/injector
cleaner , fit filter and run engine .

to further reduce emissions fill tank or half fill tank with
kerosene/heating oil , this wont hurth the engine for the MOT test and
will drastically reduce any black smoke/carbon .

if you see black smoke from exhaust whilst pulling at around 50mph in
5th gear uphill then on rear of injector pump is an adjuster, 13mm
locknut and slotted head stud sticking out , UNSCREW this to reduce
fuel metering and also drop the black smoke emitting .

you could unscrew it more than needed , but in order to pass emmisions
test, and then screw back in if you dare once youve been tested .

reduce the amount of movement the throttle pedal has , so engine cannot
be revved absolutely flat out .

i fail to see why an engine not under load has to have its tits revved
off during an MOT test, this is not good engineering practice .

on top of injector pump is a small casting with 4 slotted head screws
holding it down .
undo the screws and take off the cover .
there is a diaphragm youll see and the large mateal retaining plate
has a DOT mark on it , this should be pointing towards the rovker cover
if you want the leanest fuel setting , ie for emissions test .

on top of the small casting youll see a blanking cup about 20mm
diameter , pry this cup out with a screwdriver[no need to put back in
after] , youll see a 13mm locknut and a TORX grub screw.
undo locknut and unscrew the t grub screw 1 turn , retighten locknut .
this grub screw is the SMOKE ADJUSTER .

i would guess someones altered the fuel metering in order to make the
landy go faster, but in doing so theyve increased the emmisions .

you need to back off the adjustments ans all should be well .

ive just saved you 400 quid .

And hope that you are never stopped and tested by HMRC. Heating oil is
now marked with visible (yellow) and invisible markers...

And the fine and confiscation of the vehicle by HMRC will cost him how
much?

quite.

but you can do this stationary, like the MOT test does. Warm it up well
first though, make sure the oil's up to level and so forth. And good point
about the cambelt.

I would've thought that was more of a risk if you fill up with petrol by
mistake.

small percentage is proabbly OK.

Took the disco for its retest today. after a run on the motorway and plenty
of flooring the revs the retest results were-

peak 1 1.72
peak 2 1.42
peak 3 1.58

average 1.57

well pleased with results. total cost one bottle of injector cleaner.

so much for the experts who would prefer to sell you new injectors. Such
"experts" **** me off.
