Facelifted 1.8 nice bits onto L series - what can I keep?

Hi guys,

I've had enough now, #### this hippo, #### this engine, #### the EWP, #### the federation.

However I do still really love Freelanders - just not mine. It's never going to be a trouble free engine, and I don't want another k series - even a turbo. So my plan is to buy a decent L series for under a grand and transfer all the known-good parts of my 2004 1.8 across. Hopefully this will result in the car that so many of us consider to be the perfect 10. I want to transfer these parts across - can someone tell em whether any of them won't fit.


-Wheels/Tyres
- Shocks/Coils
- IRD
- VCU/props/diff
- Engine tie bar polybushes
- Entire Tailgate
- Front and rear bumpers
- Roof bars
- Air con system if not present
- Seats
- Door trim
- Carpets

I'm be stripping out the old dash and other horrid colour trim and respraying it black with platinum trim like my current car. I knoow that I probably can't keep the facelifted cash and binnacle but I'm not that bothere - the old one looks more landylike anyway.

Basically, I want my current car but without the ****ty ####ing engine that makes it a real chore to drive.

Any other suggestions would be very welcome :).

Hi Will. Although I like the K series I do understand your desire to get shot of it. You have as done as much as is possible so there comes a time to throw in the towel. As Digby said would it not be easier to swap the engine/gearbox? I'm sure that would be less work. That way you can get a rusty but mechanically sound L series donor ;)

I know there are some gooduns out there, but mine ain't one of them and it's time to try summin different ;). Could put another k series in them but I just don't want to. Nothing against peeps who like theirs.

DD and had a chat about doing an engine swap this morning. It's not without its obstacles and there's a reason lots of people say it's not worth it. The only thing that would be worth doing it here is that other than the engine, this 5dr SE is a ####ing nice motor and it's facelifted. I can't afford a TD4 and I atually prefer the idea of a tuned L series. Same if not more power but piece of **** to maintain and utterly bombproof lump.

So in this case it makes sense - it wouldn't if it was a 1998 1.8 ;).

I'm with you on a tuned L series lump ;) they are powerful and provide excellent economy. It's relatively easy to get 150 bhp out of them and as you say they are bomb proof. What's more if you do break one they are plentiful and cheap. I still think it would be less work to retro fit an L series engine into your newer body especially if yours is sound and damage free.
You would need the engine, gearbox, engine harness and ecu along with the front springs. The ecu would need to be programmed to your alarm/immobiliser ecu. You will also need the fuel tank and fuel lines. I'm pretty sure it's doable and it'll be unique.

Yeh it would be better to have a newer reg car. The only snag is the electrics - DD and I have a few ideas about how to wrangle it as the L has almost no electrics in some configuations. But the ABS and TC is tied into the MEMS3 ECU - so we may have to be creative.
 
I think for ease you might be better off using the early abs until from the diesel but it might be the systems are compatible. It's something to look into. There is space for a nice big intercooler in the bumper which is a bonus if you are wanting big power ;)

I'm sure there's a way, a nice big intercooler would be cool. If I can get 45mpg out of it I'll be chuffed.

I can't see why 40mpg wouldn't be an achievable target. I've just thought, your abs sensors are active hub sensors which means the early abs ecu won't be compatible. Iirc both systems use the CAN bus so with luck you will be ok.

In a worst case scenario, you might have to use the earlier abs sensors and fit the reluctor rings but that is easy and cheap task. What ever problems arise there is a way round them, a Freelander is like a giant Maccano set ;)
