Freelander 1 Facelift TD4 Oil leak

Slowly going through issues on this new to me Freelnader
Started yesterday and after opened bonnet found oil all over brake fluid bottle, coolant bottle rocker top and under the bonnet. seems to be coming from just above thermostat but what can spray it that high. quite a mess.
Any ideas or common issues caused anyone else this issue.

Could be diesel, could be sterring fluid …

Definitely Engine Oil. Black..
Cant really photo down where it appears to be coming from.. All a bit tight down there

Could be this... I think I had that cover removed... Would it spray under pressure ?

i've no 1st-hand experience of said bolt being loose ..
just info from what i've read here ..
i think it could spray .. as it's oil being fed to the camshaft a.f.a.i.k.

see page 32 of the attached .pdf
note numbers 24 & 25 ..
25 is certainly pressurised.
both look close to that bolt.

Start the engine, open the bonnet, if the bolt is not here, you will see oil gushing …

Yes it’s pray oil if the bolt is missing …

As above if the little engine cover is removed and that bolts is not in then oil from the can shaft chain can spray/ spit oil out, what may have been done by someone in the past the bolt has been tightened down too much and it punchers the cam cover a little.

So, try the above remove the little engine cover leave out the bolt start the engine or get some to start it you stand over the bolt hole with a rag and see if oil spits out.

Cam cover can break where the engine cover bolts on.
Or if the pcv filter is blocked pressure builds up and oil gets out, original type of filter needs changing every 2 years and costs a few pounds.

Many thanks for all your thoughts, I cant start engine as doing some other jobs. But I am sure this is the issue even down to the cover being deformed.
With the bolt completely out with blocked crankcase breather filter and revving high during engine tests this would have made the mess encountered.
So thanks again , I knew you guys would have the answer. I shall return with my next issues

I strongly commend the PCV vortex modification that LR implemented. The filter is a poor design,

I'd disagree with this. LR never implemented the vortex modification, BMW did. It was implemented by BMW to reduce service times in the workshop. The vortex separator passes more oil to intake system than the filter it replaced.

Correct and agreed, I lacked precision with LR; it was indeed BMW. What I failed to get across was that it was an official modification. There is no denying more oil passes through too and there is reduced service time either. For me, what it does do, is significantly reduce the risk of detrimentally high crankcase pressure conditions and the resultant failure modes arising from poor filter servicing.
