Hi Guys new on here and this may be an old topic. I have bought a Freelander 1 TD4 and I would like to know if it is possible to fit the bumper, mesh grill and lights from freelander 2. Thanks

I'm doing my early freelander 1 to facelift freelander 1 at the mo, backs finished, and swapped indicator and stop tail into upper lamps! Got the front bits just having the bumper tarted up before it goes on. Got a matching A bar and driving light pods off eBay too! Plus loads of other bits which I may post on here when it's finished, to see if I get lunched by the anti freelander brigade:)

what new bits did you need for FL1 diesel do? thinking of changing mine if its an easy un-bolt and bolt on.

Freelander 1 and 2 models are totally different.

Depending on your age of freeby 1 then you can facelift it to a later model.
97-00. amber indicator lights front/rear.
00-03 clear fronts/amber or clear back indicators.
04-06 Range Rover/disco3 style front lights and different back bumpers.

The 04-06 models need some tweaks to wiring and a different undertray but can be done.

mines 00 plate with amber indicaters. Its welly boot green and i think it looks abit naff, i just want to make it look abit better...somehow

Brought a set of alloys, as soon as i can afford my VCU then i will put them on with some new tyres. That will make it look abit better.

Must admit I thought it'd be a straight forward bolt on, it's not quite that simple but not hard if you don't mind getting stuck in!
You need:-
Back end
Fairly obvious, the bumper, 4 x rear lights, crash pad behind bumper, to make it easy the plugs off a facelift set of rear lights with wire tails. Or you end up making bits! Black plastic trim on the bottom of the rear door, not essential but it's slightly different. The back of the car is a different shape so you have to adjust it with a big hammer! It's behind the bumper so you can't see it, trial and error until it fits a few fixings are in different places but nothing a drill won't sort. Then you have to modify your wiring! I rearranged mine at the same time. See easy;) if you aren't that practical probably best to get some assistance
Word of warning, watch second hand parts prices. Some of the lamps are the same price from land rover new or even cheaper when you add the postage! I've come across that with a lot of parts off eBay! You assume it's a bargain, often it isn't.

Front end. Not completed yet,
Bumper, headlamps, plugs if you can. Don't know about the crash pad. Careful with the bumper mine had foglamp holes but no lights in it suddenly my real bargain bumper wasn't so cheap. I believe you have to trim bits away to get the lamps in! Nothing external tho. Got that pleasure to come hopefully next week, if it ever stops raining:)

I've done a lot to the interior and it's taken years off it, I've changed the colour from grey and green to black and silver, that was a lot of work. Everything came out, the carpet was dyed black all the plastics were recoloured and put back!

What do you reckon?

Forgot to mention facelift plastics are black early ones are grey! Go to a body shop supplier, they do a textured black bumper repair spray. You can use it to make everything match!

very much impressed. yours is the same colour as mine but looking very nice what wheels/tyres do you have?

Black modulars, Kumho KL71 mud terrain plus a two inch lift. It seems to be a marmite colour, there's no middle ground you either love it or hate it, personally I really like it, as the plastics are being changed to black it just keeps on improving.

I was a bit unsure of my colour in the state my FL is in but now seeing your pictures it has given me inspiration to improve. I would be interested in meeting up one day but not anytime soon as it would only make me want to spend money i dont have. I will save some pennies and sort out the mechanical probs before i think too much about cosmetic. Would there be any chance you could e-mail me some more pictures you have? PM sent to you with e-mail in

Yup, its a bit fidly, but it makes more sense from behind!?

Do bulb holders upper cluster fit lower cluster and vice versa? if so then its all down to re routing wiring. I always wondered why vehicles the size of hippos, discos etc have an upper light which works only one every rusty moon and a lower light to do all the job....makes no sense of you as me:doh:

It's not that simple. The holders are different so you have to modify the fittings to suit, basically the lugs are different to stop you putting the wrong ones in:)
