Fabricating a rear winch mount,

Id like a rear winch on my 90,

Was thinking of getting some thick plate and welding it between the chassis legs on the rear, then cutting a letter box type hole in the rear crossmember and putting a plate front and rear to bolt the rollers to,

And cutting a hole in the floor and making a sorts of access panel to get to it.

Has anyone done this, I would mount it inside the back but the digs have enough stuff to climb on top of as it is.

I just made a rear winch bumper, you can always see how the wire is going in and can keep it clean

Don't want anuthing hangin off the back, I have a tow bar on my crossmember n I manage to catch it off roading,

Wantin something hidden away besides the rollers snd rope.

Its a easy job as long as your x member is solid enough to take alteration.
Remember to strengthen it well as its only a couple of mm thick.

Well to drag an old thread up,

I've been given a winch tray and I bought an reciver hitch as my problem was I need to still have a tow bar for the caravan.

I've mocked it up and it will just all fit hight wise. Ill post pics as I go and have time

If I can make a suggestion .. but you might have already though of it ..

Cut the flange off as shown, move the receiver a bit closer to the winch mount, and weld a flat plate between the plate and receiver for extra gusseting and as a bearinjg point for the bolt in the next bit. Then on the tow drop plate, weld a nut, use a long bolt/allen bolt, line it all up and weld another nut on so you can tighten the towbar drop plate up .. it makes a helluva difference to the feel when towing .. and the noise!!

ahh you bought that custom made receiver off ebay

I'm gonna be making the same sort of thing but with a d44 fairlead that just fits between the nato and the door

Cheers Paul, i hav allok at welding a bolt onto it.my adjustable drop plate moves now so I get a clunk setting off and slowing down, the winch mount will be further foward than in that picture I minpght have a look at fitting it all in tomorrow depending on my hangover,

You mean like this fair lead all though this is a + 3" I made this from my standard winch bumper and a winch tray from gwyn Lewis

Cheers is was me that called you last week asking about a receiver hitch and you said to look on eBay and that's what I found second hand, I'd fit a new rear cross member but mines had one fit just befor I bought it so I carnt see the point of swapping it when I've been given this winch tray.

Well I've pulled the winch apart and given it a good clean in the gearbox and built it back up and the free spool is as smooth as now and its a million times quieter when winching now, only thing I've noticed is the drum gets hot so I think the brake is sticking on when winching in,

Paul have you any idea on the brake?

Yeah, mine did the same. The internals of the drum where the brake shoes run is likely to not be flat, very likely to be a bit rusty. I removed the brake, before the shoes come out use a tie-wrap to hold them in place on the brake sspindle. Then I made up a length of m6 threaded rod with wraps of emery cloth/sandpaper/wetndry that I could put into the battery drill chuck and use as a powered sanding block to clean the drum insides.

I also moved back to the brake shoes and assembly, noting which way the spring goes and the cam plate, stripped it, totally de-greased it, then used a small file to chamfer the edges of the shoes and wet n dry to flatten and de-grease the shoe faces. When it was built back it was wonderful ..

However .. when my Disco was drowned and the winch under water for two days or so, we used it to pull the Disco out, but the brake wouldn't hold! It would at first, but when Daves G4 Disco was also sliding, it was a bit too much for it! I think it just got wet and slippery inside .. I'll just strip it again ..
