Hello all,

I did do a search but could not find anything specific answering this question.

I am looking to buy one of these:

Extreme 4x4 Ltd DEFENDER QUICKLY DETACHABLE RECOVERY POINTS

It does not say it is type-approved which I hear is quite important for an MOT test these days and I don't want to get into any trouble with the police if something were to happen while towing.

It looks like the Range Rover version is apparently rated to 3500kg:

Does anyone else have one of these and can provide any info?

I've got a similar one and am pleased with it, although the drop plate doesn't go low enough if you have a lift/tall tyres and a low trailer.

What year is your defender? Tow bars only need to be type approved for newer vehicles, hopefully a grown up on here will know the precise year

My 110 is from 1987.

I just received a reply back from Extreme 4x4 who say that the above is sold as a recovery point not as a tow bar (despite them selling tow bars to attach to it) which is a bit of a shame.

As I will need to look elsewhere what other detachable tow bars are the best?

I have one and it's great :D Although expensive.
Not long after I bought mine I found a guy that does them at the Peterborough show for a lot less.
I forget his name but someone might be along in a bit that can enlighten us.

Thanks M1Ck, do you not have problems with it not being plated with the new MOT regulations though?

The testers around here seem to just love failing an old Land Rover on anything they can find (which to be fair is their job) and ideally if I was to spend the best part of £350 on a towing system I would want it to be legal!

It is a shame as that one by Extreme 4x4 looks solid as a rock.

Is a Dixon Bates no good for you?

Think a bit cheaper too

It is probably the route I will have to go down to be honest although I did want a quickly detachable one that you could remove without tools but there doesn't seem to be anything out there that complies with the new MOT laws.
