External Temp Guage

Having just bought my first FL ('03 TD4) I was amazed to find there is no external temp gauge, when I asked the dealer he said "why do you need to know? it's a 4x4 so it doesn't matter".
Even if this is the case and the FL doesn't slide even on ice....:doh: I still like to know wot the temp is.
Does anyone know if there is a kit that can be fitted?

Got one from LIDL a while back. Used tape to put it on dash and the ext temp sensor wire runs under carpet to back whell arch - no engine heat there and no direct sunlight

This is a good question, there should be an external gauge I know. Problem is, how do we wire it in if we get one? There's a few on Ebay to try?

Hi, I too was surprised at the lack of external temp gauge and also fuel computer on a "modern" vehicle.

I have purchased a Halfords gauge and stuck it over the pathetic standard clock. As the gauge has a silver case it goes well with my sport "champagne" dash.Has clock as well as external temp.

I can not understand why some folks say you don't need sumat just cos you haven't got it, else we would all be still in caves ;-)

It's a 23 grand car (new) and has the same specification as a 1990 Rover Metro 1.1 L

Can you feel my frustration when people on a Belgian autoforum laugh at me when I say I never have had a car so far which told me when it needed an oilchange or whatever maintenance to come up. They always ask me which kind of dinosaur vehicle I drive. Then they start to brag about their cars automatically switching the lights on when it gets dark and/or switches the wipers on when it starts raining. Haven't dared to say yet that I even miss an outside temperature meter, let alone a boardcomputer giving the actual/average fuel consumption etc....... (But as all the other Hippo owners, who gives a sh!t, no need to have all that bling to make your car the best....... )

Not that I care or worry about because most of them are the kind of people who find it completely normal when the garage puts a 1 liter can of oil in their trunk to fill it up a little if needed and charge them 25 € for it or in £ it is exactly £21.90 ...... (most of the time they get mad after I told them for 5 € more you can have a drum of 30 liter of premium oil). They also find it "normal" to get a bill of 400 to 700 € for a small maintenance (which means just change the oil and the oil filter and fill out a lot of checks on the bill varying from: "look" at all levels to visuallly inspected the tyres), I did mine last week for 40 € and had the fuel filter as well.

Ended up buying this on fleabay, worth a punt for the money.

A piece of rubbish, one min it says -11 then 6 ...... back light has a mind of it's own.
Since found this RS | Test and Measurement | Thermometry | LCD Display Temperature Indicators | Temperature Indicators - Wall/Desk Thermometers looks a bit better.

Not bad, would probably wire the 12v into the sidelights cct. Issue still remains, where to put the damned outside sensor! Cant be too close to engine bay and also not in the airflow, both giving false readings....

The best place for the sensor is just outside of the front door seal near the top hinge, no wind etc.

I am also completely gobsmacked at the level of equipment even on the HSE, as already said it is like a Metro in many ways.
No thermometer, no trip computer, one-touch electric window on drivers door only, manually operated electric folding mirrors, no auto-close facility for the windows on the key-fob and cruise-control only available as an extra cost option. Yet with all the stuff that is missing they go and fit an electric sunroof on a vehicle with air-conditioning!

Exactly.
The sunroof mechanism gets used at the moment as if it fails I want it sorted out while under warrenty. As soon as the warrenty is over it will never be touched again, certainly my wife doesn't want it and it is her car.
