It's a Monday thing -

By chance I stopped on my way home at the local LR garage for a chat. As I was about to leave it was noticed that my Disco II was sitting with the rear n/s corner up in the air. ???

Apparantly it's not unknown for the sensors to fail in a random position - mine had just failed telling the system that the suspension was down, so the compressor was constantly filling the bag to try to get some height back. Moving the Disco didn't make any difference as the sensor was clearly hell-bent on declaring the bag as empty and the wheel was now stuck way over its normal height with no flexibility at all. "Stand clear" was the advice - good advice as it turned out, as within half an hour there was an almighty explosion as the airbag blew out, leaving the Disco sitting right down on its bumpstops.

So my social call now entails a new sensor and a new airbag.

Is there a word for this sort of thing?

Nice. Wonder why your helpful LR garage didn't suggest disconnecting the battery to put a stop to the compressor pumping.

Helpful.

Guess they were hoping for some business....

Actually no - we were still discussing how to get me home if I left it there / can it be driven home for it to be collected in the morning, as this was at 5:30 - long after all the spanner-type staff had left and he was on the point of setting the alarm and leaving. It was only by fluke I happened to be at the workshop when it happened, normally I would have been doing 50 up the A140 when it all happened. Could have been worse then...

thats scary i got springs now so there is 2 airbags and 2 height sensors here if it helps the height sensors were only on the car for a week so they as new the bags have been on for about 6 months

Sam - I've sent you a PM.

Problem(s) solved as of 3pm - new sensor and a new bag, he didn't have any take-offs unfortunately. The explosion blew a crater in the gravel driveway and even ripped the bumpstop clean off the chassis - it was on the far side of the driveway after the Discovery dragged its behind out onto the road. No wonder it made such an impact upon the neighbourhood!

the very same thing has just happened to me today, as i drove home from work my suspension was riding higher and higher on the left. got home, thought as the engine was off it would stop filling and as i was loading up the computer, an almighty explosion followed by a landrover sat on its arse. is it an easy job to self fix or will it be a garage job?

to replace the bag is a piece of cake but u must plug in a tester to see what caused this cos it was a management missbehaviour, probably due to a faulty height sensor... actually there must be a limiting valve :
Attached to end of the air dryer unit is the pressure limiting valve. The valve protects the air springs from over inflation. The pressure limiting valve also operates when the exhaust valve is opened. The valve is pneumatically operated, responding to air pressure applied to it.

... seems it didnt work aswell:mad:

Did they replace both air bags? Best to replace in pairs. Glad you weren't innit at the time, like you say, could have been worse!
