Unfinished project needing a bit of completion can be good route to something extreme!
But most folks aint needing something to compete in safari or winch challenge, just a vehicle that is lightly modded to their needs.

TC, do you not think that buying something like that is a bit of a lottery?

You don't really know how the previous owner has driven it? all the internals would be worn and weaker if driven hard as its been built to do.

It is but could also have been well looked after,

Its worth what someone is willing to pay, a well spec challenge truck in used condition is worth in my option 6-7k with lockers and winches ect Newley built ones are fetching double that

I recently turned down a motor i wanted to see because i did some internet searching and discovered its been offloaded hard so I'm exploring other options. The price wasn't right for me with the uncertainty.

That defender the OP posted is worth decent money if all the stuff on it is tip top. There is no way of knowing how much abuse the lockers or any of the internals have taken without a strip down and/or a good fine tooth comb look over.

There is no point having a truck that has all the accessories to climb everest if the engine is on its last legs or the whole thing has had no maintenance for years.

Likewise, it could be a solid truck with panel damage.

Yes.

Mine gets used for landing but is no way abused or even run hard; and it still gives me a headache


Im firmly in the camp that says get a decent base model and then buy the toys.

Maybe the OP could wait for someone breaking a challenge truck and see if the owner would do a deal for a lot of the toys. Devon see's quite a lot of full axles for sale etc etc.

I think the bottom line for me is that I either buy something which is modded and I can prod (plus verify its usage and build quality) or build upwards from ground zero. The other alternative is to join the Fiat-500 Owners Club and add 3 stickers and a set of dice to attain the title of owning one seriously modified car!!

I already own a heavily modded car which is stored in my garage. This cost some serious money to build and yet it’s worth far more in parts than as a whole car on its own. This is a big shame really as it’s a fabulous piece of machinery (the thing in my avatar). This is where the problem lies though: Everyone wants something for nothing (me being one) so a ready-built vehicle with a proven history is probably the best option for me at this time. I’m tighter than a ducks chuff so for me to start buying lots of kit to then mod my own bespoke vehicle seems the wrong thing to do at this moment in time with my current time restrictions on when I’m home or not. I’m therefore going to spend as much time as I can when I return home to hunt the right truck down in the hope that some poor sod has invested his hard earned cash for my future pleasure.

I agree with all of the points you guys have mentioned – you all know your stuff, that’s for sure, but I need to buy a ready-built Landy for now with me having so little time on my hands for projects these days. I’m very new to the Landy scene so I may have to learn via a few mistakes but that in itself is not a bad thing for when I get the time to plant my arse and have some serious build-time in the future for ‘Andrew’s Landy Project’.

P.S. Regarding my Avatar Pic: One of the four Aerocatch pins was not seated correctly so the bonnet looks as if it’s out of alignment. (The shame and embarrassment of it all !!!!!!).

To build a truck like that your looking at a good 10k. They don't come cheap !! Nor do the parts to build them
You have a £2000 in winch's and bumpers, £2000 in lockers, £1500 wheels and tyres £600/1000 roll cage, challenge wing kit £350 list goes on

This is the type of info that's invaluable to me! I still need to prod the thing but I'm now thinking of chatting with the guy when I return home in 9-days )) to pay a visit and see it in person! It's a long way but often I find that distance needs to be negated for the right vehicle. I'm sure that last bit will sound rude if someone is reading this part of the thread for the first time
