Out of interest, how often should the expansion tank filler cap be replaced. I have recently had to top up about 0.3l of coolant into the tank. I havent put any in since i have owned it 1 1/4 years. A little worrying!!

So i was just interested if anyone knows how often the Cap should be replaced. Mine is a 2002, so could be still the original cap. Could an old cap cause any loss, or if it wasn't tightened enough?

I have read all the stuff about cracking heads, gaskets etc so i need to keep an eye on it.

Out of interest does anyone know when they replaced the plastic to steel dowels? I have a EU3 engine. All I can find is everything saying the newer TD5s. EU3?

Also will a pressure test show if the gasket is gone, or are there certain situations which a blown head will not show up?

This is very early on, no other related problems etc, but the loss has seem to come since it was last serviced (1000 miles ago), so they could of taken a little out for some reason as they did say that they tested it, or be related to the use of the heater as its the first time i have really used it constantly since April.

So could be nothing at all, could be something very expensive!!!

A buggered cap can and will cause coolant loss. It's hard to put a life expectancy on them. I bought a replacement cap for mine and it lasted about 3 months (I think it was an all makes cap rather than a ****part one anorl). The cap I fitted after that has been ok for tha last year.
