Hi Folks, my series 3 88'' petrol had first go in snow saturday and within a mile the silencer pot on exhaust blew open, big rust area just waiting to go....
Looked on paddocks and whole system only £40 plus vat. How difficult will it be to change on own, on drive? Also will I need to change all hangers as well? Cheers

Only a good look at the hangers will tell you but more than likely you will need to grind the bolts off. Easy enough job on the drive. I would suggest you dismantle it first before you go ordering bits you might not need.Soak the hangers in WD40 or such like overnight.

The last complete kit I bought came with all the hangers, nuts and bolts. Easy enough job as long as the manifold studs don't break or strip - use a socket with a very long extension to reach them. If anything gives way it's a manifold off job and the delicate use of a drill. Note the orientation of the silencer - it's not difficult to put it on wrongly!

Just changed the exhaust today. Replaced the exhaust manifold as well as the studs sheared and didn't fancy repairing the old one.
One thing I did find was the only way I could get the down pipe to tuck under the chassis was to jack up the car and remove the wheel.
Anyway to answer your question yes you can do the job at home.

I'm assuming yours is a petrol as I was unable to locate a new manifold for my diesel when I looked a few weeks ago. a couple of my studs are sheared where it mates with the down pipe and I was hoping to replace rather than repair

Yes it is a petrol and that also came frm mm 4x4.com. Seems to be a common problem, should imagine they also do a diesel one. £48 inc vat and postage.

I tried brass nuts on an old manifold but they kept loosening off - I eventually used a second nut on each stud as a locknut which helped enormously. The old studs will come out if you're careful with a drill (pillar drill is best) grind the tops flat if you can, centre punch carefully and then use progressively larger drill bits.
