Last week I was trotting home after work, and my rear silencer fell off. I've bought a complete rear tailpipe replacement part which is fine, but I am having trouble getting the old pipe off.

I don't want to pull it too hard and cock up the rest of the exhaust that is still working. Are there any tips or tricks to getting off sections of corroded-together pipes? Its soaking in WD-40 now, and I was going to try hammering it. Do I just hammer the lip in the direction the pipe needs to come off, or do I just **** it around the join to free it up a bit. If that fails, is it a wise idea to just hacksaw it off?

The clamp snapped when unbolting it, so I need to find another one of them this weekend.

I am a complete novice at car stuff and probably shouldnt have a Land Rover... :/ Any help would be great.

You don't say the method of pipe connection, so I will assume that it's the slide one pipe into another arrangement, which can weld together as u can see, you could try cutting a few diagonal hacksaw cuts in the outer pipe and opening the metal out with a chisel or screwdriver.
And Plus-Gas is the rust freeing agent to use not a water dispersant.
It's easer to buy the system, you usually find the center box goes 6 -9 months later anyway. Or go for stainless and "fit & forget :)

Yeah its the slide on type. Thanks, I'll have a look. It might be a case of borrowing a car for work next week and just do the whole thing. Some of the joins on the other parts do look pretty corroded.

Thanks!

Did the back box on our Corsa last week, cut off most of the knackered section then gently run a grinder down the overlapping bit till it went through. Put a screwdriver in the gap and twist, it came apart easily after that.

If you don't have an angle grinder tool station sell them for £20 and ask for a pack of 1mm cutting disks and some safety glasses ( I've almost lost an eye to a grinder and a friend has) so I would say glasses are the most important part

The pipe came off pretty easily in the end, once the first movement happened it slip off. The rubber mounts were the worst bit of putting it back together! I'll get an angle grinder anyway. Is it worth buying a more expensive grinder? £20 is the cheapest I've found for a 4.5 inch.

A bit late now I know, but as the two hangers unbolt from the vehicle its easy the fit the rubbers when the parts are down on the ground, then just lift and screw the hanger back.

As for angle grinders... I had a £20 (NUTOOL) grinder for 4 years I could always smell burning when it started but that's all and it did what I wanted, until I had a paving slab cutting job, I cut three and that was it, so I had to go and purchase a replacement this time £45 from B&Q and the extra power was amazing and with its build quality it will last me for ever. :)
