Hi again – 1.8 R reg
My hippo has always has a bit of a resonance from the exhaust. A while ago I noticed that the mounting bracket from the front pipe to the IRD had started to pull apart at the weld on the exhaust. In fact after hitting a traffic cone that a kind lorry driver set spinning across the road it pulled a 2cm hole in the pipe. I replaced the whole exhaust at the last MOT and the replacement one (cheapo off the tinternet) has a different mounting at this point. Rather than have a welded bracket than attaches to the back of the IRD it has a captivated nut on a peg – I checked with the supplier but was told this was the only version they have. No real problem as it was simple enough to make something up.
So all Ok but I still had a similar exhaust noise – most noticeable around 2500 to 3000 rpm. I have been replacing various engine mounts/bushes etc over the past few months as general maintenance and to cure all the standard clucks and rattles. But over the past few days the exhaust noise has been accompanied by a sound which makes you think something like a heat shield is loose and also vibrating. This turned out to be the nut on the IRD end of the improvised mounting coming very slightly loose (OK so this time I used a new nylock – me being lazy I guess). This cured the vibrating noise.
While I was trying to figure out what was causing the resonance noise I noticed various posts on the internet and have seen several MGF and Lotus owners mentioning an Anti Tizz Bracket (http://www.bellandcolvill.co.uk/lotus/parts/2-11/Anti_Tizz_Bracket_Kit/30.htm). This appears to be used to stop the front pipe vibrating at the same RPM range I am experiencing – I also notice from reading post on this forum that other have had similar issues with the exhaust.
My question is – has anyone fitted on of these to their Hippo. I’ll order one (once I check I have the mounting points on the block) as its not expensive and let you know what happens.
Cheers
