exhaust manifold removal?

hi,
i will soon be attempting to replace the exhaust manifold on my friends 1.6 freelander (05 plate)
to get to the number 1 cylinder exhaust it looks like i will have to remove the alternator
my question is how do i slacken the tensioner for the belt?
do i need a special tool to do this?
