Hi

300TDi Disco, 1995 Manual.

Had a good search of the forum and think i have diagnosed my problem but looking for expert advice before i go at it gung-ho

So, engine seems down on power, did a de-cat and blanked EGR to see if that helped, but nothing.

When testing the downpipe seal i noticed a big puff of black smoke towards the back of the engine. It's not coming from the exhaust i fitted, so am i right in thinking it's the manifold gasket? If not, what could it be please?

Is it a job for a home or a garage? I'm quite handy, but dont know the 300tdi that well yet. I figure i need to fix it whether it's the cause of the performance drop or not...

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a how-to or a list of parts I'd need please?

At time of writing not sure if my location is set, so near M42 Junction 3.

Thank-you as always for your help.

Mine 'lost' the manifold stud closest to the bulkhead, No idea where it went, but suspect the numpties who took the head off to fix a bad radiator may have not replaced it!

I'd look closely and maybe take the exhaust off at the manifold and work backwards to see where the smoke's coming from.

I did have a feel and found a couple of holes where i thought there should be a stud. I bet the same happened here.....

If there is a snapped off stud, is it a case of stud extracter and new stud in it's place or likely to need some kind of welding or something...

Maybe best to get a garage to sort it, but that's £££ i dont really want to spend!

you will need a new exhaust gasket , obviously , but no other new bits unless you are missing a stud .
its an easy job to get the manifold off just dont forget to take it off at the manifold down pipe junction first !!!
check with a piece of stiff wirer or small screw driver to see if you have a snapped stud first if you have stud extractors you should be ok .
good luck and hapy spanner swinging:D:D:D

Thanks for the very good advice. Will be getting my shiney spanners and air ratchet dirty then!

If i only replaced the exhaust gasket 2 weeks ago, will i need a new one again?

Shall I open the Britpart can of worms? Is it really worth 3 times the price to get LR Genuine? LRdirect :: Search results
