Morning,

My 91 RRC recently had the middle box removed as it was rotten. My mechanic suggested it would sound louder/nicer without a box at all and while it definitely sounds more V8 like, I'm not sure I like it.

So, I can't just put a silencer back in as he cut the rear silencer pipe about and welded in a 3" section of SS pipe. I'd also like it a little more burbly than standard but don't want the bark it has currently.

I was going to buy a generic silencer from Demon Tweeks with 3" pipe but am unsure what length box to create the right noise. Sorry this sounds vague but I'm sure some of you may have done similar so advice as to what size would be welcome.

Also, she runs hot under load. No mayo in oil cap or dipstick, not losing water. Water pump looks like it's been replaced. Radiator doesn't seem to leak and has been flushed but am beginning to think it might need a new rad...?

Thanks a lot
Adam

At last a V8 owner with sense. Get a new box fitted you know it makes sense. :);)

Yes, some of us do have some sense Wammers but it has to be said that not all exhausts, even standard ones, make exactly the same sound. I've recently had a new rear box fitted on my 3.5efi & it produces a touch of 'bark' now, though not enough for me to complain.

I have no problem with a bit of a burble but take exception to the consecutive wet fart sound some think is sexy. :):D:D

i did something similar replaced the poorly centre box with a straight threw pipe. not sure i like it time will tell if not its getting a complete new system. the centre box was the original landrover part either frim factory or dealer replacement

Thanks for this. I've emailed them for a quote

I removed the center box on mine ages ago, produced a nice burble up to 3k RPM and then would bark, i've just fitted larger diameter down pipes and its now way more deep and grumbly with the bark now coming in at 4k RPM. The down pipes were about 15mm wider than the old drinking straws I removed, not much hassle other than it was more awkward to get a socket over the nuts to bolt to the manifold.

I bought my 4.6 because I love V8 burbble. So first thing was to remove midle silencer.
Sound nice for me, in town sound proper V8, on motorway over 70MPH its quiet.

Quick update. New centre box fitted from MIJ exhausts (thanks Zen) which has removed the bark and the droning but retaining a nicer V8 burble than standard. Pleased with the noise; it seems appropriate for a classy old motor!
