Etch primer or Mordant solution??

Is the galvanising recent? If it is then you must use mordant solution (aka T-wash) Fresh galv contains a greasy element that paint will not adhere to properly and the mordant solution removes this. Degreaser will not this properly apparently. The other solution is to leave the chassis outside and exposed to the elements for at least a year and then use etch primer. The T-wash does make the chassis change colour, (I was terrified when it ended up looking like it had been thrown on a bonfire ) but it is meant to do that.

With my new chassis I did:
- brush on mordant solution
- leave for 20 mins (instructions on the back of the bottle)
- wash off thoroughly
- brush, leave, wash (for a second time just to be sure)
- leave the chassis to dry totally
- apply etch primer then topcoat etc

T-wash isn't expensive (£12 for 2.5l) I used under 1l for a 90 chassis. For etch primer I used hammerite special metals primer then finally chassis black. About 2 or 3 of the little primer cans did it and they are about £4 each.

Yeah im looking for buying a brand new one, im thinking

-mordant
-etch primer
-hammerite

Should last a long time then, the pictures are good! always gets me excited to get mine started. Either of you ever considerd buying a galvanised bulk head too? or is just worth repairing and painting one?

thanks

I have considered it but my bulkhead is in pretty good nick. Once I get a welder I will strip and weld it then get it galved...the recon ones are so expensive!
