Essential tools

Just wondering, what essential tools do you keep in your landy?

I don't mean like if you use it for work and have ****e loads of stuff in it or anything valuable, don't post details of that, just the kind of stuff you keep handy 'just in case'.

Jack, wheel brace, torch, some cheap spanners maybe?

Yeah handy to have one if it get's a bit cold

• Hammer

• tow chain/rope
• torch

In recent bad weather:

• shovel
• brush
• shackles
• anti freeze
• etc

Personally I always carry:

Breaker bar and 27mm socket & 19/17 mm for normal cars.
1 Litre 10/40 Engine Oil
PAS fluid
Brake/Clutch fluid
1 Litre Coolant
Various spanners 6mm+ an adjustable and some screw drivers, pliers and adjustable pliers.
5 ton tow rope + 2 x 3.25T rated shackles and a smaller D shackle for small towing eye's and an "ON TOW" sign.
Tyre pump
Tyre pressure gauge/tyre tread depth gauge (it was part of a set so it goes in the glove box!)
Cable Ties
Jubilee clips
6 x Bungee Ropes (for my roof bars)
Spare bulbs (for all light's)
Maglite Torch & spare batteries
Torch that runs off cig socket
Spare Fuses (all ampage's used in car)
2 x Blankets
1 Litre+ of fresh water
Dog Bowl's
Most importantly a pencil/paper and a mobile phone with enough talk time just in case ya get stuck.


For my family/dog's I alway's carry Wet Wipes (ya never know when they wanna crap), a few nappy's (for my toddlers in case it's a long journey) diluted juice and food.

If I plan a long journey then I add a fuel can & extra water, food & clothes and diff oil (leaky rear diff) & for when I ain't in the Disco or I can't bodge a repair to get home I've also got an RAC membership for my wife & I (for any vehicle ).

What? do you have a 130 hard top or always toe a trailer?

I work nearly every day using chainsaws, strimmers and other 2 stroke machinery. So I have an old metal toolbox that lives on the back of the pickup, containing a good assortment of spanners, pliers, screwdrivers, cable ties, duct tape and other bits that hopefully enable me to at least bodge a repair on both the kit and the truck in an emergency!

Under the drivers seat is where oils are stored - 2 stroke, engine oil, EP90, I think there's some antifreeze, WD40, anything else oil related.

Behind the drivers seat in the truck cab is a good selection of ropes, strops and bungee cords. Oh and a lump hammer and a sledge hammer. And a bowsaw. And an A-Z of UK with some of the pages torn out when I needed to start a bonfire, let's hope I never have to drive to Skegness!

In the shelf along the dash are more pliers and screwdrivers, spare fuses, torch, billhook, and several old Gold Block tobacco tins I inherited from my late grandfathers shed, which are perfect for keeping any loose nuts and bolts safe in.

I think that's about everything I cart around with me every day! The only thing I'd like to take is my socket set, but I can't find a convinient place to stash it where it isn't in the way - any ideas?

A chinagraph pen to draw routes on the windscreen. Saves having to keep looking down at a map. The wife cant map read, and I dont like satnavs.

Ive also written on the inside of the windscreen all the relevent dimensions when towing my caravan - eg caravan height, width, weight etc. Useful when low bridges suddenly appear in front of you, as if dropped from the sky.

I have a full tool kit fitted to my wheel arch in the back on one side and then boxes with ropes and shackles on the other. It's mainly because I'm too lazy to take them out after off roading but they come in handy more often than you would think, especially in the snow.

Got two metal ammo boxes - one with ropes, straps, jump leads, etc. the other is a slowly expanding "Landy" toolkit. I don't want to take all my good tools out and about all the time, so I'm slowly gathering together a spare set of spanners, sockets, screwdrivers, etc.
I have a small fire extinguisher, jack, wheel brace, sleeping bag, bottle of water, tyre inflator, IR themometer, warning triangle, gaffer tape and cable ties.
The next category of stuff to start getting together is spare parts/service items. So that's belts, oils, water, etc.
I'm sure it'd be possible to fill the back of my Ninety with spares and tools - Sod's Law dictates that whatever you leave at home will be the one thing you need. So there is school of thought that says you carry absolutely everything... or nothing.

I wish, nah it's all packed nicely in a small container (like a tesco home delivery crate but 1/2 the size), and sit's nicely between mid row seats and a rear dickie seat. Probably a bit overkill, but I prefer to be prepared

Just remember that everything that's loose in the car can become a projectile if you're involved in an accident. If you haven't got a full sized bulkhead it's worth strapping or bolting stuff down.

I've just had a thought (happens occasionaly) and have stuck some wee straps I've got into the 'for sales' bit.

we have got a fixed tow bar, we pull a spare defender TD5 with us so we have all the spare parts to hand - a bit costly on the old insurance though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What type/brand of fixed towbar have you got? I was looking to buy one a few weeks ago to tow a mates van with. The ones I found were either dirt cheap and probably crap, or professional but foookin expensive.

a qualified mechanic, a hammer, a can of WD40, a roll of gaffa tape and some cable ties.........
