Hi all.

Well the Disco is off the road again. Its been leaking oil out the drivers side swivel ball for a while now and its got to the stage where its pretty much empted the front diff.
Ordered a swivel ball re-build kit and as the ball is corroded a new one of them too.
Now the passenger side doesn't appear to be leaking so i was planning on leaving it alone.
I remember it being mentioned on here that if you grab the road wheel at the 12-6 position and theres movement then something else is a miss.
Just went and gave this a go and on both wheels there was a couple of mm movement in the wheel and brake disc.
What does this mean? Am i going to need to take the other hub apart and fix something on that as well?
Gotta order any new parts tonight to ensure there here for my day off on wednesday so any help or advice on this would be greatly appricated.

Cheers Chris.

hmmm, quick look of the forum reveals it could be swivel bearings, wheel bearings or knackered cv.
Gonna go take it apart tonight i think and see if i can work out whats had it.

Try tightning the bearing up 1st see if that cures it... saves stripping it all down fer nowt

Yep that was the problem on both sides. Tighten it up and fixed that issue.
Stripped one of the hubs down tonight and now looks like i'll be stripping the other side down aswell as the ball is corroded too, joy!

If you are replacing the swivel balls, I assume you will put in new bearing and pins as well?

Yes all new bearings gaskets, etc. They all arrived this morning and the new swivel balls should be here tomorrow ready to fit on wednesday.
Never done it before but the strip down of the drivers side was pretty easy so hopefully not going to run into any problems putting it all back together.

enjoy - I've just done mine, it aint so bad once you've scraped off the acumulated clag, oh and for some reason LR decided to use 7 pins to hold the ball on :confused2:
and make sure you get the scraper seal retaining plate on the right way round - I didnt and had to strip the whole f'ing lot back down.

Ok, the large plastic thing is the actual scraper seal, when you strip the old one out make sure you notice which way round it goes ( it is quite obvious though), the metal ring is the retainer plate, the holes round the edge line up with matching ones on the swivel housing, it matters, really matters which way round you put it on - when you come to fit it again look at the one that comes off, and then check it against the swivel housing itself, then mark the correct side.
if ya dont it wont go on and you'll be tekking the bloody thing off - and as this means stripping the whole thing back down it aint nice - I made this mistake.
good luck

Thanks for that mate. I'll be sure to check which way round it goes on.

Stripped the other side down tonight and all went well apart from the track rod that goes on to the passenger hub at the front of the vehicle, bastard thing would not shift after hitting the bar with a hammer, nothing. My balll joint splitter isn't wide enough to go on so put the nut back on it and hit that (worked on the other side after a couple of hits) ended up getting angry and hitting it a few times and in the process twisted the nut up the thread.
Looks like unless we can re-tap it tomorrow i'll be in need of a new track rod end.
My question is will any standard track rod fit? I've got the larger HD steering arms fitted anyone know if the threads are the same as standard ones? Also will i need a left or right handed thread?

Cheers Chris.

If its the same as mine (300tdi ) the track rod is 2 X RH thread and drag link is 1XLH and 1X RH
I would think the threads are the same for heavy duty rods but hope someone else can confirm this:D

Is that the rod that connects the steering arm from the steering box to the hub-just to be sure :D

OK-on mine the ball joint at the steering arm end is LH and hub end is RH,Thats so you can adjust the steering centre.
As a matter of interest I got new ones from Paddocks ( full set-3X RH and 1 X LH ) They were Delphi make and good quality:D:D
