I had a similar thing, If I had headlights on I could take the key out and the engine would only stop when I turned the lights off..turned out to be the wrong bulb had been put in the rear light cluster and was causing an earth problem.

My old man's Rangie did this after it was converted to a 300tdi - it was the fuel cut off solonoid as mentioned above. You can always just stall it out until you get it fixed!

If you can get your voltmeter on the solenoid whilst running, you should read 12-14v. -when you turn key off, this should drop to 0v and the engine stop immediately-if it stays at 12-14v the solenoid is still energised and the problem is in the signal to the solenoid-possibly ignition switch or other. If it does read 0v and the engine still runs, the solenoid is at fault letting by or not seating properly-give it a smack-these are electrically opening and shutting via a spring-sometimes the rubber seal or spring gives up or crap on the sealing face-might be worth testing its function first in case it is a fault with ignition switch-good luck
