Hi

I have recently change my injectors in an attempt to stop it smoking on hard accelerating, and now it wont start. I have blead the fuel filter, pump a few times now and it would appear to be fine with no air.

It did start fine before I changed them.

Two questions I'd like to ask, how tight should the injector nuts be, and can overtightening them cause them to not seal properly. I did fit new steel and copper washers.

It does fire and really tries but just wont start. Any obvious reasons why ?

Would be grateful for any advise.

Many thanks

Sometimes days you just wish u never started a job.

Have you bleed both sections of the pump? there are two screws on the side. but to be honest I never got anything out the upper screw. you can also crack off the pipe to each injector whilst someone else cranks it over. however if you keep cranking eventually you should get all the air out.

what colour was the smoke before injector change?

Thanks for replying.
I have blead both on the pump, a few times now, and lovely pure diesel was coming out. I did loosen the injector pipes too and cranked it over and I think diesel was coming out. I must admit it was dark and I was doing it by torch light. Do you have to do the one at a time and tighten them as your cranking ?
I guess I just need to just check everything when I can see what Im doing. My main concern is that the injectors might not be sealing properly and not getting the compression. Is that likely ?

There was no smoke at all on tickover once warm before, only the normal bit of blue when first started.

I will sort it though :) eventually.

If you have someone who can sit in and turn the engine over after you have cracked all the injectors.

Once you have fuel coming out of them all, nip them up 1-3-4-2 and you will probably find that after nipping 3, your engine will start up and try to run rough! That will even out a bit when you nip up No.4 and should run properly when you nip No.2.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Guys for your advice help, but I've been a bit of a Wally, and just thought I'd tell you just in case it may happen to someone else.

I did say it was fireing last night, but pumping the accelerator wouldnt make it catch and rev.

Tonight I blead the pump again which was fine, and did get someone to turn it over while I cracked all the injectors to check fuel was coming through. This was enough to get it just ticking over, but wouldn't respond to the accelerator which confused me. Poking around with the pump and revving it from there, it worked and sounded lovely.

Obviously while I was changing the injectors leaning on everything, I had pulled the cable out of its location. I guess it would have rev up last night and all would have been fine.

What a Plonka, but hey, you live and learn.:D:D

Always good to know what the answer was. might be worth seeing if you can fix the throttle cable a little more securely.:)

Thanks for your comments chaps.

Still haven't sorted the black smoke out though. You sound like your a man of experience seadog. My engine seems to run and sounds lovely, however it does smoke a bit (black) when running along, nothing on tickover, and smokes quite a bit more when I put my foot down. Guessing/hoping this might be pump timing. Can you/anyone tell me which way to turn it, or is it a case of trial and error.

Again thanks in advance for your thoughts/advice.

If it's black smoke it's probably burning oil.

White smoke is generally unburnt fuel.

Grey-ish white and we have got a new Pope.

How much oil do you use and how often do you have to top up?
