Hi the engine warning light has come on. Car feels a bit lumpy. Could it be the injector pack? Any other ideas would be gratefully received as hubby works stupid o'clock hours and needs the car. It says injector on the top of the spark plugs. No wiring seems to be adrift. Your brains and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The mention of spark plugs is a big clue. It's a petrol. Probably 1.8 but possibly the V6.

Is it the yellow engine shaped light that has come on?

It's usually emissions related and a code read would tell you exactly what.

I was thinking more of what year it is. I guessed it was a K 1.8 because it says injection on the plug cover. There was a significant change to the ECU, ignition and emission system after 2001. This altered the number of issues the MIL responded to. A session on a code reader is definitely a must however.

Thank you for all of your input. Yes the yellow engine shape light is lit. It is a 2001 Freelander ES 1800 cc. Hubby has had to take two rest days as he is worried about driving the car and causing more damage. We hoped it might be something simple but The Bitch (my nickname for her as she is a rather beautiful shade of blue) will be in the garage on Monday morning. Thank you so much for your help. You guys are amazing. We will have to get to a meet if we can and I can buy you all a beer.

Thank you all for your help at the weekend. The final nail has been hit into this story ... it appears that the onboard computer is shot and we have been advised by our mechanic that it will cost us more than she is worth, which is a bit galling seeing as we have just replaced the front discs and pads and the tank straps. So we now have a Freelander ES 2001 1.8, petrol sitting on our drive that we cannot afford to replace the ECU (I think that is what he called it). Know anyone who wants one of these for breaking or repair? Please contact me on here (we live in South Wales) if you would like to give our Free Landy a new home or refurbishment.

Total rubbish. Get a second opinion. I've never see an ECU to just become "shot" in 25 years. It'll be a sensor or a coil or some other wearable item. It almost certainly won't be the ECU.

£350 for a new ECU or £250 for a repaired one. But it probably won't be the ECU itself.
What's the cost of getting another car in comparison to fixing this one?

That sounds like “this is beyond our capability and we’re fed up with it”.

What led the garage to that conclusion?

Have they checked all wiring, sensor inputs/outputs, checked coil packs, injectors, idle control valve, fuel pump and filter

Lots of cheaper and simpler stuff to check/replace before condemning the engine ecu
