Engine Temp guage not working.

Hi , please could anyone put me in the right direction to solve the problem of my engine temp guage not working . I have had the Discovery 1 week and it did not work when I had it ,its a tdi 1991 manual model,I have driven it over 250 miles with no overheating probs . I have cleaned the single electrical connection on the sender in the head ( front )but still not working , thank you .

if when you short the wire to earth the guage goes full sclae it's the sender - if it doesnt and you've got continuity in the wire back to the guage it's the guage
