Hi,

I have browsed the forums to see if someone has had the problem, and there are a few threads about this but none are described as the noise only being heard when you deaccelerate.

Had my discovery for about a month now. It has developed a strange noise coming from the engine. On tickover you cannot hear it, whilst accelerating you cannot hear it, however when you slow down in gear, or change down a gear to slow down you can hear a tapping noise - Which gets fast the higher the revs are. Can sometimes heard it when cruising at say 60-70mph.

Checked the valves, they seem OK. Had the timing belt done today also.

A while ago I did turn the diaphragm in the fuel pump - Could this maybe have caused a tapping noise?

Any ideas would be fantastic. I've read about vacuum pumps but I'm hoping someone has had the same symptoms as mine has, and they fixed it and can let me know what it was!! :)

Thanks

Foz

Also, you can't really hear it when the engine is cold. Only once it's warmed up.

I have exactly the same problem, for the book it is not related to the speed the wheels are turning but to the RPM.
You've got better sound insulation on your discovery but in the defender I can also hear it faintly while accelerating and even cruising but is more noticeable when decelerating. I can be going 70 put my foot on the clutch and the noise stops within a couple of seconds.

Coincidentally I have a leak from my vacuum pump so will change that today and let you know if it makes any difference.

Changed leaky vacuum pump yesterday but it didn't make any difference to the tapping noise.
However I readjusted the tappets today and although I haven't warmed it up it seems to have made a difference.

Thanks for that.

I had my tappets adjusted about a month ago and it made no difference. When I get paid I think I'll buy a new vacuum pump and hope it cures my noise - as it's been getting louder recenty!!
