Hi lads, Benn ages since i was on, and im looking at starting a new project:

End product would be a trayback challenge vehicle, not dissimilar to the devon 4x4 challenge vehicle.

What i have in mind for donor vehicles:

rangerover for sale in Cork: €2,500 - DoneDeal.ie

land rover 110 for sale or breaking. for sale in Louth: €600 - DoneDeal.ie

The intention would be to strip the defender to rolling chassis, raise it, drop in the 4.6 and put the cab and single cab roof on it, shorten the chassis, and build the front wings and rear tray and rollcage from tubular steel (of correct rating).

This is the basic plan (lots more to thinks about) but basically i am wondering have i picked the right engine/chassis combination, will building the front and back frames from tubular steel be a disaster to work with, and am i better off with the auto box from the r/rover or a manual box from the defender??

any other thoughts or advice from people who have tried this before is greatly appreciated.

Ive not done anything like this before but wouldnt a diesel engine be better.
Runs cooler and doesnt conk out when it gets wet.

id agree, but from my reading on other projects and the likes, the rover v8 is much lighter than an equivelant diesel, and to get the same power from a diesel it would want to be a lot newer than the rover v8, and subsiquently a lot more expensive, but if theres ideas for 250+bhp diesels on the cheap let me know, im open to all ideas :)

Ah!! also in my long list of questions is where can i get proper measurements for a 110 chassis (i.e a 1980's chassis) ?? I have a maintenance manual with some drawings but there fairly basic measurments...

if your putting v8 in 110 or 90 same thing,v8s sit where the do in rr or disco in relation to front axle ,so that if v8 mounts in rr line up with turret mount on rr it should be in same place on 110 ,v8s used longer bell housing in defender as rr and disco and gearbox /transfer box will line up with existing mount hole on chassis, othr parts like front prop will be the same etc

i might be wrong but i dont think the engine will transplant from an electrical point of view. im nearly sure it has to be synced with the BECM under the drivers seat.

that range rover is way over priced anyway. i know its got low mileage but its a 1994. you should get a v8 for about €1000 here in ireland and from what i hear the 4.6 is better. but an interesting project all the same, may i suggest the following vehicles if your going down that route

landrover defender 110 for sale in Galway: €600 - DoneDeal.ie

Rangerover 4.0 SE V8 Petrol. PRICE DROP for sale in Kildare: €1,800 - DoneDeal.ie

Swap front timing case etc and convert to distributor- well documented just google
