would a NA engine fit into a disco 1 auto (p reg). before anyone tries to shoot me down, i want to run on straight heated veg oil and I'm after the most basic, well engineered engine possible. I hate engines with electronic sensors and things and just want a bog standard easy engine to work on. a 200 tdi or even 300 tdi will run on oil and an oldish 200 or 300 ant got no sensors or other such rubbish on um !!!!
if you got limited tools and knowledge dont you fink a engine transplant is a bit of a major undertaking ???

My 300 Tdi runs on whatever oil I chuck into the tank ... everything from used engine oil, diff oil, 2 stroke oil, veg oil ... al mixed less than 50:50 with diesel .. 
Veg oil, especialy new bought for 74p per litre or less, is well worth it as it also helps keep the system clean ...
Old cooking oil for free is even better value, but 'cos I absolutely rely on the Disco I still don't go more than 50% mix ... but I know many people do use it 100% with some prep and additives.

Problem 1 is that an old 2.5n/a engine will have trouble shifting a 2 ton disco, unless you live somewhere very flat. Problem 2 is that the old lucas injector pumps are said to fall apart after prolonged exposure to veg oil. Problem 3 is that you haven't done your homework as you already have a simple, reliable engine which can run on pretty much anything you can pour into the tank.
I think you would find the 2.5NA with HALF the effective power of the 200tdi to be so sluggish .... it would probably never get the gearbox into top gear.
The 200 tdi is fine on all the "other" oils and fuels, but take care to get the viscosity down as there is always a risk of damaging the intermediate pump vanes in Lucas CAV injection pumps if the fuel is too thick.

I used to run me old 200TDi discovery. on 65/35 vegoil diesel and never had a single problem with it.

dont do it the tdi engine will last loads better on veg the td lucas cav pumps wont last
the old TD in me 110 did about 40K running high SVO ratio, even IF the IP seals do go it's a cheap/easy task to replace

I ran me poor old td on veg oil for ages too. Even the stuff with anti foaming **** in it before I found out it turned to sand in your engine. Never had any problems but plenty of people out there that'll tell yer it's a bad idea.
i dont read much from people who can say their engine went pop - but there's plenty of people who will say they will go pop, dispite having nothing to support their comments

Could you not just fit the proposed heater kit to your current engine, run that & if it later does need replacing, then fit an older 200tdi or early 300tdi as a replacement & swap over the veggie kit. You won't lose anything & as your engine should be ok, you probably won't ever have to do the swap.

You're wasting your time and money putting pre heaters or whatever in. TDI engines thrive on veg oil. Just pour it in the tank. Mix it with some diesel to thin it a bit in the winter or use it neat or nearly neat in the summer.

ran my 200tdi 90 on 50/50 (40/60 in winter) diesel veg oil with no problems does no get as good mpg 3-4 mpg less but if you can get it at a good price or free then all the better i did have the seal go behined the pully on the injector pump when i was using veg mix but that may or may not be because of the veg
