Right you have got to bare with me on this on, as i dont have a clue about range rovers (own a disco)

The father inlaw has got a p reg RR vogue 4.6. The head gasket has gone on it (dont have much info about how long ago or anything yet, it was her told me). Is it worth changing the gasket or just swap the engine, because some of the threads have said that the lining thins and other problems.

Also what engines will drop in without too much mods

cheers!

take the heads off and look you can see if the linner has slipped, if the gasket is ok take the engine out the block is prob cracked..

Hello, I have a 4.6 P38 of the same age, and my head gasket went a couple of years ago. It wasn't cheap to do, but I have not had a single problem with the engine since then. I paid around £800 to have the head gasket done, heads skimmed and all the labour costs. But you have to remember that this is still much cheaper than a replacement engine which would cost several thousand pounds. I'd recommend taking it somewhere that knows what to do though. I did some research and asked a number of garages before I took my P38 in for repair. Some garages clearly had no idea what they were talking about and would probably have messed things up good and proper. Speak to the mechanics to see if they really know what they are doing. I didn't go with the cheapest quote, but the most knowledgable garage. Hope you get the P38 back on the road soon!
