Can anyone help!! I have bought a 110 1988 defender 2.5 di for £350 of gumtree , picked it up from Margate , and drove it back to bourn Cambridge , she blue out white smoke when she started and runs lumpy for the first 2minits but then cleared , when I got here home I thought the engine was knackered so , i got another engine witch I know is a good one, I put the new engine in and no smoke, now a week later she is doing the same as the other engine, smoking on start-up and there is a lot and she is getting worst to start, when she dose start she is very lumpy changed all filters and oil have not got a clue can any one help???? Thanks Ben

There might be a totally different reason but my 90 had a similar problem, took ages to start, once it fired it blew out plumes of white smoke and ran like a bag of nails. After the timing belt snapped and I fitted a new one and set the timing correctly, I realised the belt was a tooth out or more causing the problems above. But there's more than just incorrect timing that can cause your problems.
Do you have any more symptoms? Ie pressurised fuel tank, watery oil or oily water? White emulsion under the oil filler cap? Loss of oil or water?

The oil is black but sill at the same level , the water is still like new , there are no signs of the head gasket I really have not got a clue because after them 2mins in runs fine ??? Thanks

I too bought a 90, drove home with white/blue smoke issues, changed cam belt as a matter of course and also found that the pump was one tooth out.
The other smoke was oil from the transfer box seal, leaking on the handbrake drum and then being thrown onto the exhaust.

I would first drain the fuel and refill with new its cheapest option and easiest it would be unlucky to have two engines with the same faults so look at what you didnt change. Hope this helps

pump timing on both engines??? bit of a coincidence.. i would suggest air leak in the fuel line somewhere, this would allow in air when stood but purges after a couple of minutes running, would cause white smoke and rough running on start up for a few minutes, check where the pipe joins the fuel tank

cheers steve
