nice one thanks for that only I was seeing a lot of people selling 10w40 for defenders on ebay and no mention of this being appropriate in my haynes manual.

steve

ye they recommend it for my 200tdi defender in the handbook bit runney for my liking
as for the disco 300tdi it states in my hand book for that 15w/40

so i use it in both

Ah the age old question of "what oil should I use" in truth there is not really a correct answer.

Do you understand how engine oil works? Do you know what the two numbers refer to?

Oil spec is relative to WHERE and HOW it is being used.

The important bit is the 40 in this engine, the number before refers to the start up viscosity, the engine is behaving differently when it is cold, so the oil is less viscous which means it can blast about the engine and provide early on lubrication and is makes for easier starting; once it has warmed up it will act like a SAE40. If you lived in a hot climate then you would be able to use something such as a 20w40.

At the moment a 10w40 would be fine, come summer I would be more inclined to use a the 15, BUT it then depends on what sort of driving you do.

Here in the UK, particularly at the moment with the cold weather we have been having a lower cold viscosity would be ideal. If you look at the recommended oils you will actually see they spec almost ever grade depending on your climate.

Discomania says it like it is

the only thing i would add is that a 10w or 15w oil when it's cold is a lot thicker than a 40 when it's hot

the reason you have multigrade oils is that oil thickens a lot when it gets cold so the perfect viscosity is a hot SAE40 but this oil would thicken far too much when it got cold to give the right protection when you started it up

the idea is to made an oil that thickens less when it gets cold, the thinner the oil is when it's cold, the faster it can be pumped around the engine.

10w-40 or 15w40 either are listed for UK climate but i go for the 10w-40 in mine just to give it better cold start protection

regards

Pete
