Hi all, just wondered if anyone could help me please.Im going to service my TD5 90 soon and was wondering which type of engine oil to use.Ive been told that semi-synthetic is the correct type but if mineral has been used previously to replace it with that or it can have an adverse effect. Is this true or has someone been winding me up? Grateful for any help. cheers

According to the temp/viscosity chart, for UK climate the best is 10W40 and to comply with this:
Engine oil - Td5
Use oil meeting specification ACEA: A1, B1 or B2.

Lubrication
General
The engine and other lubricating systems are filled
with high-performance lubricants giving prolonged
life.
CAUTION: Always use a high quality oil of the
correct viscosity range in the engine. The use of
oil of the incorrect specification can lead to high
oil and fuel consumption and ultimately to
damaged components.
\
Oil to the correct specification contains additives
which disperse the corrosive acids formed by
combustion and prevent the formation of sludge
which can block the oil ways. Additional oil additives
should not be used.
Always adhere to the recommended servicing
intervals.

So long as you use oil that meets the recommended specifications then you will be fine.
I change my oil and filters every 3000 miles and use cheap stuff from my local farm supplies shop. I dont like paying for a fancy name or fancy shop for that matter.

I did have a 200 litre barrel of Castrol GTX Diesel 10w40 which I got at a receivers sale but that is all gone now so back to the farm suppliers.

..and is the oil + 2 filters 1/3 the price of a branded/aditivated oil which works for 10.000 miles? ;)
3000 mile oil changes is my choice as my engine has only done 9000 from new. I would stretch them to 5000 even on the cheaper oil. Thats what the specs are for.

As for cost it depends how much you buy! Buy it five litres at a time and probably not. Buy a 200 litre drum for £109 and it sure is. Thats nearly 25 complete oil changes on a TD5.
I always buy OEM filters as I've had trouble with some of the pattern ones so no saving there.
Gets even more attractive when you tip the filtered oil you've just drained out of the sump into your fuel tank saving you about £11 in fuel at todays prices.
Some peeps say I squeak when I walk but I say a saving is a saving especially when that saving translates into beer tokens :)

The LR official line on late Td5, if you take a look at TOPIx, shows 5w-30 Fully Synthetic. The official recommendation is Castrol GTX Professional which is the trade name for the Ford spec Magnatec 5w-30.

In the real world, it doesn't matter too much as long as you make sure it meets WSS-M2C-913B.
