Hello All,

had kind of a neighbour around the other day. He asked what the problem would be amongst the many others I mentioned the oil smell. When he checked the dipstick he said, it'd be overfilled. Have taken some pictures, but as I can't see really any oil around the engine where the smell comes from... The garage who did the last couple of oil changes asked already about almost two years ago. Usual answer nothing wrongo_O.
Attached are some pics from the dipstick. Thought that for quite a while. Not sure if would also relates to the turbo, but would see. Wanted to make sure first before changing the oil, as the new one cost me about 200€ to test.
Hope on the pictures it can somehow be recognised.

KR
Matthias

You don't say which engine ot is but presume Td4.

Are you sure it has been over filled or could it be the injection pump leakiing into the sump?

If you set the level then make sure it does not go up.

Sorry GG, yes it's a Td4.
Sorry, not sure, but by injection pump do you mean the high pressure pump? Would it be the sealing ring that's been mentioned often on here?

Yeh, forget what goes but the HP pumps can leak and it runs to the sump resulting in a rising oil level.

Think the O rings are in the pressure solenoid (presumably at the other end of the pump) which can cause starting/running issues when they perish.

Mine's an L Series, so I'm just going by what's been posted on here.

Failed high pressure pump fills oil sump quite quickly.
As above, set level correct and watch what happens.

Also, if HP pump is failing there is a risk of diesel runaway where engine runs on even when switched off so be careful.

Thanks @GrumpyGel @andyfreelandy ,
for the tips. I am wondering if I can do that myself. Found a video on YT . If I remember it correctly it's a CP1, isn't it? Not sure if their kit is Bosch https://x8r.co.uk/universal-bosch-c...high-pressure-pump-seals-kit-leak-repair.html or better to take the one from ebay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182610819448 . Will definitely check the oil in the next days to see. It looked a bit thinner than usual therefore might make sense. Would any of you know the torque needed for the pump parts? Couldn't find anything so far.

Thanks @hd3
, yes understand now. Will check what Andy and GG mentioned. Is it a big deal to get the hp pump off? Maybe I can change the seals myself. Just would need to find a super clean spot as it seems.

You need to find out if the oil was over filled or the HP pump is leaking first.

Drain it to the correct level and monitor if it then rises.

I would drain it to nearer the 'min' mark than 'max' in case it fills quicker than you think. Don't leave it to long before checking.

If the level goes to far above the 'max' it will cause serious/dangerous problems.

As I understand it, you need a special tool to remove the pump. Not sure what it is. Don't know if you need special gear to recondition it. There are threads on here about it.

"Torque setting for cylinder head bolts is 25nm."
according to : https://www.instructables.com/Universal-Bosch-Common-Rail-CP1-High-Pressure-Fuel/
( regulator position slightly different on the shown pump .. by the looks of it )

Is it a big deal to get the hp pump off?
i'd say 'yes' to that ..
though .. not attempted it myself .. as i don't have suitable work space ..
am sure folk who have done it .. will be along to advise :)
( acquiring the special landrover tool is needed .. can be bought online ..)

+ 1 to that ..

Ok got one and drained oil out this morning. If I see it correctly, it doesn't look too good for it. It wasaround the lower marking nd now is up again.

So you pumped the oil out to the level shown in pics 1 & 3 - which looks to be 1/2 way between Min and Max.

Ran the engine (or used the car).

Checked the oil level and it was higher - going by pic 2 looks to be at least Max maybe higher.

That's a rapid rise. From the threads running through here, I would say that's diesel coming from your HP pump. There is no sign of coolant getting in there. As I say though, I'm no TD4 expert.

@GrumpyGel
yes, that's what I did, drove with it afterwards. When watching the video yesterday I starting also thinking if it might be cooling liquid. Some weeks ago the cooling was below minimum. I refilled it, but it didn't happen again so not sure. I have the oil in a canister and it doesn't smell like diesel, though it might not be recognizable, but it somehow smells a bit like the cooling liquid. I tested with a bottle of the reddish one and also the engine oil. Not sure if I really would smell it, so asked the missus and she thinks as well more like cooling l. and not diesel. I think I'll get further tests done will drain again maybe tomorrow and see.

There is a cooler that perishes on the TD4 - but I think that's the Auto cooler, so coolant wouldn't end up in the oil - presumably that give transmission fluid in the coolant.

I dunno what happens when diesel gets into the oil. Dunno if they keep separate and one may float over the other or whether they mix - to maybe produce a more 'diluted' oil.

I've only had diesel in the oil on my L Series once - when the injector return hoses perished, the diesel mixed in with the copious amount of oil on the outside of my engine :D

Water sinks in oil, or oil floats - o_O The oil pump though presumably sucks in from near the bottom of the sump so will mix it all up to and you get sludge forming.

I'm pretty sure you'd know if there was coolant in there. You can usually see the sludge on the underside of the oil filler cap I believe.
